Guest tummydoc Posted January 30, 2008 Share #61 Posted January 30, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have it on my Panerai Watch and not sure of the qualities of the glass but i can tell you to scratch it would be very very hard to do. I had this watch 5 years and not a scratch and i am not the most gentle person when working with my hands. The edge of a Panerai's crystal is recessed/enclosed within the bezel. Some others (Rolexes for example) have the edge raised and beveled, and tend to chip. Unless they change the design, the M8's LCD is also raised and beveled around the edge. Sapphire crystals also crack and shatter. Because these are unsupported except at the perimeter, the larger the surface area the more prone to cracking they are from impact. The LCD is certainly larger in area than any wristwatch I'm aware of.

mlesser Posted January 30, 2008 Share #63 Posted January 30, 2008 I got the news in Sweden about two hours ago, so the deal has gone north as well as west. ML
fordfanjpn Posted January 30, 2008 Share #64 Posted January 30, 2008 Somehow replacing a noisy shutter and a scratch-susceptible LCD sounds more like a fix to me than an upgrade. Does anyone feel that for the last year or so we have been field testing for Leica, paying for that privilege, and now paying again to have substandard parts replaced with what should have been in there in the first place? If you bought a new car, and a year later the car company came to you and said that the brakes in your car aren't working properly, but for roughly 20% of your initial investment you can have them replaced with brakes that actually work, how would you feel about that? Just asking questions here folks. I'm afraid I'm still reeling from the announcement and am not quite sure how I feel about this yet. (At 4am I'm also not really awake yet.) psss Posted January 30, 2008 Share #65 Posted January 30, 2008 i am very excited to hear leica's commitment to the m8 platform and that they want to keep upgrading it....i am not sure why i would bother with a scratchproof screen (unless it also gets better, higher res, brighter,...) a new shutter (what's wrong with the one i have? just to make it more quiet?)...thank god the firmware is free, but again, who cares about AWB.... i guess it is good news but somehow the improvements don't really go into the directions i would like them to go: file quality....give me the option to have 16bit DNGs, give me the option to use the latest, fastest card....give me software that works with 10.5.... there is no way that the m8 will ever get a FF sensor...unless the entire inside would be swapped (which i would not call an upgrade...)...there is no way to just add a iso dial to the body...these are some of the things i would expect from a m8 mkII/m9/whatever.... i don't think that anyone will build a sensor to fit the existing m8 with a higher pixelcount (would i want smaller pixels anyway?) so the idea that next year we will get a sensor upgrade is an illusion....a next gen sensor needs a next gen body because EVERYTHING changes... i was in the market for a second body and wanted to wait for announcements...this does not really change anything...i will get a second m8 and will be happy....and i probably won't even wait for the saphire screen m8 to ship.... farnz Posted January 30, 2008 Share #66 Posted January 30, 2008 I'm in the UK and a registered M8 owner but I haven't recieved the email yet. It must be in the post. I'm just happy at the announcement and Leica's response to users' issues. Pete.

fordfanjpn Posted January 30, 2008 Share #68 Posted January 30, 2008 When the second round of upgrades is offered, will I have to buy the first round in order to get the second round? I would not be at all surprised if the second upgrade requires the first one. And by the time the second one becomes available, the cost of the first one will have gone up 50% in cost. In other words, get it now, or regret it later. Bill

Goldie Posted January 30, 2008 Share #70 Posted January 30, 2008 The idea of an upgrade path seems a very positive step, especially in such a rapidly changing technology. It also makes sense for a company with limited manufacturing capacity; they can grow the number of units out in the market place and keep those units up to date. It will be interesting to see how far they can take this path, before a re-design.

andybarton Posted January 30, 2008 Share #72 Posted January 30, 2008 New M8s as of August 08 will be 8.2 versions. Until then, it's straight 8s. Believe me or not.
Printmaker Posted January 30, 2008 Share #73 Posted January 30, 2008 i received this email from leica this morning..... • If so desired, the camera will be picked up at your home and sent directly back to you, without any intermediary stage in the process. We would feel very honored if you would be amongst the first to participate in our new program for the lifelong value retention of your M8. Yours Sincerely, The Leica internet team So someone is going to fly from Germany to Hawaii, pick up my camera and put a new shutter in it for less than $2,000? Sounds like a good deal (for someone) to me. Tom
ho_co Posted January 30, 2008 Share #74 Posted January 30, 2008 ... So if they are going to go to 1/4000th in order to achieve shutter quietness, they should also introduce either a lower base ISO or some sort of software ND filter ... Tim--I think they'll just send 2 free ND filters to all M8 owners. Love it, you buy the upgrade voucher in March but nothing happens until August at which point your camera gets upgraded. In effect, you're lending Leica €1200 interest free for 6 months... We're supporting the first production run of R10's. Or maybe Leica is investing in a French bank? Would it be a new shutter module? that's my take. Likely so. Maybe one ready for FF? A couple people have asked whether the M8's on the shelf will continue to be the same. My feeling is just what Andy said: No, of course not. They speak of the M8 as a continuing platform. So as they add/change features, the camera they're shipping changes, and we're allowed to upgrade to the current version. Reasonable and innovative. Each upgrade will cost us more than the incremental difference in Leica's production cost, but less than the cost of a new camera. Depending on what has changed, you may or may not be able to get upgrade #2 without getting the features of upgrade #1. Prices of the two situations may differ. And Bill's admonition is reasonable: "Get it now or regret it later." And think of it from the point of view of the repair technicians: There'll be an M8 crew, an R10 crew, and a legacy crew. That is, Leica will be producing only two models, an M8 and an R10. So the techs will only need to learn one camera. Brilliant concept! Mssrs Lee and Kaufmann are to be congratulated. We've all come out winners! --HC
sdai Posted January 30, 2008 Share #75 Posted January 30, 2008 Cost won't be an issue for working pros but speaking as an amateur ... the upgrade doesn't make a lot of sense (to me). If they schedule to offer one upgrade every year and each of them would cost 1800 US dollars, then by skipping three of them I can save enough dough for the next "latest and greatest". Before I open my wallet for an upgrade voucher, I want to make sure: 1. I'm really interested in the new features and enhancement. 2. There'll be no M9 or whatever in the next 5 years. hahn73 Posted January 30, 2008 Share #77 Posted January 30, 2008 Wow. I never would've believed it until I saw it. Now let's just hope Leica does the right thing for its loyal customers and prices it within the galaxy of reasonability.

dseelig Posted January 30, 2008 Share #79 Posted January 30, 2008 I am a working pro and cost does matter. The funny thing is this year I had to upgrade my canon system the differences in the 1d mk 111 and what I got for my mk 11n was 1500 dollars. the diff .in my 1ds mk 11 to 1ds mk111 was 2600 dollars and I sold my 1ds mk11 a month before the 111 was announced. So $1800 does not sound very high except for no sensor upgrade. Or a lower noise in the upper isos fix, and no fix for problematic focus shifting high speed lenses. I will have to wait quite a while before I consider doing this upgrade. David I would like a quieter shutter but 1800 too much, the screen I will leave that upgrade to collectors to even think about. David PS if the upgrade for a quieter shutter was say 600 or 700 and the screen change maybe but 1800 for no improvement in image quality that is a joke on the dentists and doctors that buy alot of these cameras. mooky Posted January 30, 2008 Share #80 Posted January 30, 2008 Well, I think it's great as well,,,,,,,,,,but for we R shooters - please, someone with news tell us that there really will be news about the R system as well - because right now, I'm thinking the 'assume' word...you know, silence means that a surprise is in store????
