Very handy when you need/want it, very easy to ignore when you don't; I really don't see any realistic objection, except a fossilised hankering for days gone by. But Leica revived the M6 for that group of customers. Leica could easily hide the function in a programmable Fn button, instead of a dedicated red one. .

I think that Leica is well aware of the need, has been so for the last 100 years, but the customer should be aware that it is completely impossible for a small producer. How many cameras to beta test? One hundred maybe but probably a lot less. For how long? A few months or so. Then release thousands for intensive use…. Even Apple software from a giant corporation with virtually unlimited resources is never bug-free straight out of the gate.

Well it would help if different kind of photographers would test the cameras. If only the influencer and some professional photographer are on the beta test, then the extrem situations are not covered. And I would give it also to people that don't know anything about the camera. Just to check if they find something unexpected.

To me you need both: some Leica enthusiasts and some that don't know anything to test a product.

For instance: I was sitting on a deserted beach on Lake Nyassa (Mozambique) , no other tourists within 30 km, suddenly the local village church choir unexpectedly comes in for an impromptu performance. M240 with me. (Phone in the room ten minutes walk away no coverage anyway) I would not have missed this memory for the world. And notice how well the M240 handles the circumstances., far better than any phone of the time.

Which, as far as I know, is exactly what Leica is doing - but Jono can answer this one better than I can.

Last week I was taking some photos of a play rehearsal when the director asked "Can you just take a clip of the actors singing this song? I know I could do it on my phone, but your camera is so much better". I was using the SL3-S, but in other circumstances I could have been using a digital M. That's just one occasion when it is useful to be able to take video as well as stills. (You can see it on FB here if you like top quality art made to the highest production standards ;)

I would reject this notorious request even with my sl3-s and proudly told him a true Leica user never take videos with their cameras, and walked away holding my head high and chin up

There are no True Leica Users (tm) other than those who've never even given it a thought. They are immersed in making photographs, no time to consider how they look or how others might see them, ignorant of the sound and fury which, after all, signifies nothing.

i like your post @DadDadDaddyo !  ultimately should, to my understanding at least, photography be all about taking pictures, and nothing else...

Given that NZ has only about 5.5 million people in, by the time you deduct non photographers, photographers who don’t want an M, photographers who want one but can’t afford one etc etc the pool of buyers is pretty small.

There’s very little retail competition in NZ for anything. Even the supermarkets are all owned by only 2 companies.

When the Leica distributor starts giving away free things, there’s a reason. Even the Safari is included and that’s barely been out 6 months.

If it was still the old protected import license country it used to be I might agree, but it’s not.  Now it  is just a wee subsidiary importer from Australasian company’s and has been for years. Apple nz was just renaissance in disguise. Doubt that has changed. Leica OZ has a surplus they are dumping is most likely!

hmmm, on a rather expensive Leica. hard pass

There is no thing that a true Leica lover will not do to customize his camera. At least 2000 Euro in bag, half case and strap, expensive engraving, custom leatherette, hide/replace the red dot, take sandpaper to the black paint, add a soft release, etc. One invisible dot of glue to turn it into a real  M camera is a small price to pay.

Which is more or less what I said. It doesn’t really matter who has the surplus. The salient fact is that they’re trying to dump it!

I was thinking more toward the bag actually. My experience is Leica bundle lenses with bodies when new is coming like the sl2 deals when the sl3 was imminent . It a dilemma now too as I am thinking of going to the m-ev1 since it essentially an m11 with viso.
