Hello all. I’m traveling to San Francisco and then on to LA via the PCH w an overnight in Carmel. I can take only two cameras. One will def be the M10P. The other choices are:

  • Leica M10M
  • Leica M3
  • Canon 5DSR
  • Canon A1

The two digital Leicas will complement each other in style and exchange batteries and lenses. The film cameras are an interesting idea but I haven’t traveled w film in ages. The M3 also benefits from lens commonality w the M10P. The 5DSR is a tank that will require separate lenses and a dif charger. It is, however, a color digital camera as opposed to the M10M. Were I to take the 5DSR I’d mount the 40mm pancake thereby lightening the load.

Thoughts?

Only take one.

I did that on a once-in-a lifetime trip w my M8 only to have the shutter break after my second photo. Always take a back up for special trips.

Take the M10M and M10P and no more than three lenses - all in a small bag that never leaves your side.

I’m taking my 50 Summicron and a 35mm CV Nokton

My setup usually like this.. one M digital, snd the other M film with more BW and few colors

but most of the time.. M digital with a couple M films and shared the lens..thats my photography intentions

I only take one on trips, unless it’s for work. I highly doubt your shutter would break again. Then again, it is Leica. In that case maybe I’d take just the 5dsr.
I assume you’ll have your phone for anything that needs to be cataloged for posterity for any reason. So you’ll have 2 anyways.

But when I travel I take my m10 and leave my mono at home. I realized awhile ago the more I bring the less I shoot, again unless it’s a photo specific job or project trip.

Personal / travel pics never need the resolution/iq advantages of the m10m and so conversions are easy too.

Film, for me that’s a specific use. I know when I want or need it in a concrete way.  Hand checks are not always so smooth these days.

very personal question only you can answer. Most of the best travelers I know always regret bringing too much but almost never regret going minimal.

Have a great trip

When I travel to Melbourne its always with three bodies including M10M and the SL3+SL2S and  few M lenses and maybe 1 SL Apo lens

I have two Pelican cases now and I would rearrange the lenses in one box as I probably wouldn't use the Apo 90-280. The carry on Pelican would probably be over 7 kgs. in the past I have crammed my Thinktank bag as it looks smaller and they dont worry about it. I will have to test the pelican carry on case.

Both m10’s without doubt. Light, interchangeable and all you need.

I also would not travel with one camera for such a trip (backup as you said), especially since the M is a small system.

Unless I've missed something, then the first questions to be asked are:

  • Why are you travelling? Holiday? Business? Visit friends/family?
  • How many days are you going for? For a business trip with day in each place, one camera is enough.
  • What sort of things do you photograph? People? Landscape? Urban streetscape? Architecture? Wildlife?

Not to forget, I suppose you travel by plane. That means x-raying. So film? At every flight the x-rays add, the effect does not heal.

I travel with one digital camera and with lenses: 15mm, 35mm and 90mm.

I would take M3 as a second camera to M10-P. Especially if you did not shoot film for a long time. I always fall in love with M3 again and again, when I do not use it for some time. Especially loaded with Tri-X 400 and with 50 Summilux Pre-Asph.

For short special trips I am travelling with M240 + 35 LUX V2 and M3 with 50Lux Pre-Asph (or Cron 50, V5).

I’m attending an opening in LA where one of my photos is being exhibited. We’re flying into SF a week earlier. Two days if SF, drive down the PCH (bucket list item for me), one day in Carmel, then three days in LA.

Personal experience:  Used to travel with two M-A and 3 lens.  Nowadays I bring M10-p and 1 M-a as for lens I'm in a 50 phase so it the summicron v5.  So 2 body one lens.  As you mentioned the 35 and 50 maybe just the 35 would be enough.  If airport security is a concern you can buy your film in SF and have them processed in LA.  Maybe have c41 bw film for ease of precessing (finding a lab).  That's my 2 cent.  Enjoy the hike.
