How many of you are happy with their M11-D

Hi all, 

I am considering (note sure yet) a M11 color body to go with my M10M… and, if I had not read about the huge Problems with that camera that some of you had, I would probably consider the screenless option as the most interesting..

Is the M11D a camera to forget or is it only about a few very unfortunate users who picked a wrong copy ?

Not sure if my experience is what yours would be, but here it is. I purchased the M11-P and M11-M first and then the M11-D when it came out. I have been taking the M11-D over the M11-P most of the time. I could not be happier with the M11-D. As they say, your mileage may very.

The M11-D is my first M camera.  I have now been using it for over a 1/2 year.  I love it.  It has been flawless.   I keep telling myself my next M camera will be the M12 Monochrome.

this question was already discussed on this forum - in more than one thread i believe.  see my input from some time ago...

but here in short : i couldn't happier with my M11D.  earlier i owned an M10D for 5y, which was a fine camera too, but the new one, the M11D, is just better in many details, for my taste at least.

i am not sure what could be improved in a hypothetical new M12D, and if necessary at all : faster boot/wake up time ?  IBIS ?  global shutter ?  but as said, i am perfectly happy with the M11D, as is.

I’ve been extremely unhappy with it as it killed my files on the SSD.  I went back to Edition 60 for the screenless M and will never get another screenless M.

I‘m very happy with my M11-D. The only issue I experienced so far were rotated photos after importing to Capture One on very.few occasions.

My M11-D is still my most used and favourite camera, I could use my M11-P and not use the screen of course, but the removal of the screen actually makes the camera nicer to hold as well in my opinion. As for the connectivity, I configured it once to my preferred settings and then haven't really used the app since.

I guess, M11-D works best with 6-bit coded lenses, otherwise one needs to set the lens using the app.

That’s bothering me a little as I have quite a few lenses, and not all of them coded… and I am not aware of a very easy way to add in metadata the lens used that then is used in Lightroom.

It is your experience you described well in another thread @setuporg that makes think so much, as I have been thinking of a screenless digital M for some time.

I went digital in 2014 only (M(240)) after shooting slides for years on analog Ms, and I have a very « analog way » of taking pics. My dream M would have been a screenless M10M   …

But given

1) your problems with the M11-D

2) the weird feeling you cannot completely live without the app (what happens in 6 or 8 or 10 years from now : how will we be able to set the camera if there happens to be no more app ?? Can everything be set using the visoflex ? ) 

I do hesitate…

You can use this LR plugin to add the lens used in the EXIF. I used it a lot before, when I had two uncoded lenses and kept forgetting to switch in the camera. Now I only have one uncoded lens and the camera remembers it every time I put it on. But I still use the plugin after each import to correct the aperture used, while I still remember.

I am happy with my M11D. Light weight, strong battery and good design. I have the M11M too.

I am completely happy with my M11-D and use it daily. It's my main camera, the M Edition60 and the Fujifilm X100VI having been mostly retired. The 35 Lux Steel Rim reissue is the only lens I use. I dislike menus, buttons and complexity in general. My use of the Fotos app is to get the time and GPS co-ordinates from my iPhone, to format the SD card and to perform firmware updates, all of which it does with minimal fuss. In my opinion the M11-D is like a film camera, but with the advantages (to me at least) of an excellent digital sensor.

as for @setuporg : i feel very sorry for you and your bad luck with that lame M11D you had gotten and used at that time with such enthusiasm if i recall correctly.  such a bad case stands out negatively obviously, just like a lucky lotto draw would do so in the other direction, though i imagine these being rare instances while the much larger, perhaps sluggish crowd of happy owners stays relatively silent, grateful for not having to go through such debacles.  luckily we are able to locate a few happy users in this thread too.

 

in terms of rotten memory devices, i recently had to deal in my home machine with a brand-new but corrupt Samsung 990Pro NVMW M.2 SSD device, that just once in a while erratically suspended all disk activity which required a subsequent reboot, very annoying for a lnx server.  in such computer scenarios one is at least able to swap the broken unit for something new, while that's obviously not an option with the M11D...

sold my M10-D and bought a M11 while waiting for the M11-D. It's a much better experience for me.

I'd be hard pushed to say which I like the most between M11P, M11M and M11D. You already have a monochrome so that helps. Most of the time I like the M11D the most. I do however need to take some sort of action if I add a 21mm 1.4 or similar, either select one of the other bodies, use the visoflex2 or spray and pray!

I do really like the removal of the option (and therefore tendency) to check the screen after every shot and find it a very relaxing option. I'd never want to use it for anything critical however like a wedding!

Documentary photography and similar with a 24/28/35/50mm lens and it's pure perfection!

Can you get to the different set up menus with a Visoflex 2 if no Phone is available ?

You cannot use menus with the Visoflex 2

In the unlikelihood that Leica goes under and the app disappears, you could probably get the Android version from an online archive and load it on an old Android phone. 

But also I've seen people saying they're working on their own tools/software to change settings, I believe it is all managed over PTP which is a standard (with probably some proprietary stuff that they need to figure out by reverse engineering the apps). So that combined with USB-C should make it possible, in theory. I haven't seen anyone saying they've made it work, but there are definitely hobbyists playing around with that. 

Worst case, I think the M11-D comes with relatively sane defaults (wish the standby time would be higher by default). They are also documented in the quick start guide, I believe. 

So I'm not really worried about it myself, but I understand the concern.

I think that you could set the most important parameters with certain sequences of function button clicks or the like, unless you have lost your instruction manual. No iPhone required, but some masochism.

It is probably because you were so negative on the M11's from the start.

But hey, I wish I had an M60 edition 🙂
