Advertisement Posted May 18 Posted May 18 Hi jdlaing, Take a look here Those of you who own both an M and a Q and you’re only taking one out, what drives your choice?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
ktmrider2 Posted May 18 Share #22 Posted May 18 (edited) I have a Q3 and MP so my choice is driven somewhat between film and digital. However, the biggest choice has to do if I am feeling lazy and want to take advantage of digital technology and let the camera decide or if I am feeling like I want total control. When I set the Q3 to full auto, I tend to let it decide f stop and shutter and as long as I see it the settings are within my desires, press the shutter release. If I want a higher shutter or more depth of field, I obviously set that control. I find this method faster and more accurate than using the MP. When I want to feel young again and pretend I know more than I do, I love the MP (basically a camera with 1980’s technology). I find that more often it is not between a Q3 and a MP but between a Q3/MP and my Ricoh GR3. Having a pocketable camera is a hoot and perhaps the best of everything. I am recovering from heart bypass surgery and the GR3 is in my pocket a lot on my walks to get back to normal. Edited May 18 by ktmrider2

High_n_Dry Posted May 19 Share #24 Posted May 19 I still use the M quite a bit. The obvious reason is the lenses. I have vintage lenses from the 70's (my dad's), steel rim re-issue, and noctilux. These lenses give a certain look that is totally different and not achievable with the Q. Also, when shooting street, there is nothing faster than zone focusing. Putting on a 21 mm and setting to 5.6 turns the M into a point and shoot. Welcome, dear visitor! Gateway77 Posted May 19 Share #25 Posted May 19 I find sometimes I want the clarity of the EVF and the sharpness of the crosshairs going green on the subject. On the other hand sometimes I find all the extra information and 'explicit' clarity make for information overload with the Q's. On those occasions the OVF of my M11 is a welcome relief and joy - as I'm looking at the scene and not the digital interpretation (however stellar it is).
Gateway77 Posted May 19 Share #26 Posted May 19 Also as High n Dry has just commented, an M11 with a 21mm (or 28mm) and zone focusing is very freeing for just point and shoot.
Mikep996 Posted May 21 Share #27 Posted May 21 Advertisement (gone after registration) "Interesting - I was eyeballing that Hassie recently...looked like a good "trade in my 10RBP/Leica lenses" for it option but couldn't bring myself to do it. You've given me something to (re)think about! Thanks!!! " To follow up on my response/comment, above, today I started working on a trade-in with Park camera UK - My 10RBP and a couple of Leica M lenses for the Hasselblad X2d and a 38mm lens. So basically it'll start out as a really big Q3 without video! 🙄 I could get more money, of course, selling the Leica gear myself but I hate the hassle involved in selling on Ebay/similar sites and Park will send someone to come to the house and pick up the gear! Still some discussion but looks like it will happen...
Derbyshire Man Posted May 21 Author Share #28 Posted May 21 I'd be interested in regular updates on that, although I won't take any of it seriously for 18 months 🤣
setuporg Posted May 21 Share #29 Posted May 21 I have all kinds of Ms and got a Q2 in 2019 at launch. I used it always alongside an M and only used it separately for video of the kids. I tried to do one camera trips with the Q but always missed the Ms because of other angles. Now with the Q3 43 I used it for a month alone and it really can be a single camera for Europe too. The main use of the Q turns out to be one-hand shooting with a beer or coffee in another hand! I still try to carry two cameras with me whenever I can.

didier Posted May 21 Share #31 Posted May 21 I am a long time M user. Got a Q2 reporter I like (aesthetically and to use, with the advantage of weather sealing and automatic operations), though I am not a 28 guy… and happen to crop quite often. I am about to trade in my Q2 r and go back to a color M to go with my M10M, as I enjoy the OVF more than anything else…
SrMi Posted May 24 Share #32 Posted May 24 Another point for Q cameras when traveling: I do not need to bring my sensor cleaning setup with me, which takes up quite a bit of space (sensor loupe, blower, brush, swabs, fluid - the cases taking most of the space).
Elliot Harper Posted May 25 Share #33 Posted May 25 To complicate things more, I own M11, M10-R, Q3/43 and SL3-S, (and a M6 re-issue film, but forget about that for now). When I am alone, I always take M with me. When I go with family I take Q3/43. When I know I will go alone and have fun at night, I trust SL3-S. Only when I travel by car would I take M6 as an tandem
scroy Posted May 25 Share #34 Posted May 25 Great question. I own an M11, Q343, SL3. Q343 - for travel and time with the family - my wife insists on the Q3 so I can hand the camera to others and get in pictures. (2nd body for other 2 combinations) M11 - mostly when its just me - EDC/travel. SL3 - for bad weather, when I need the other lenses for reach, video, crowds/events, or image-stabilization for low light.
Tseg Posted May 26 Share #35 Posted May 26 My Q3 43 is mostly used with family outing/events when I want to participate in the moment and when I travel by plane. The M is for most else, when I want to observe and photograph the moment or pretend I am creating art. I can use the Q and be less focused on photography.
Mikep996 Posted May 26 Share #36 Posted May 26 Further update re M10R/lens trade-in on Hasselblad X2D: Trade fell through - I accepted the quote but when arranging for shipment of my gear - the packing list download I received which listed all the trade in items included the quote which was now £800 less than the agreed-upon quote. So I canceled the transaction. Further communication from the rep indicated it was a "glitch" in their system so it probably could have been sorted out but I was rather annoyed and not interested in pursuing it. SO...I bought a slightly used X2D and an XCD 38mm lens for a "good" (😱) price on Ebay. I haven't decided what to do with the 10R BP/lenses. Could do Ebay I guess though I'd rather not. I've never had an issue with Ebay - buying or selling - but I've become too lazy to do the listing/packing/shipping. Nowadays I buy stuff on Ebay but don't sell anything on it. But maybe I'll get up the energy to do so! Nah, probably not... 🙄 3 1

Of course I’ll now put some time with the M but maybe when the weather is threatening the the Q2 will come out again who knows ? tough one but good one ! After a little use of the M, I’ll probably keep both. The Q2 will keep coming with me for forest, landscape photos as I sort of like better its 28 Summilux (and the automation, EVF) rather than the M11 / 28 Summaron setup for that purpose. The latest being an amazing setup for street where the Q2 narrow dof scale has been an issue for me. So its going to be the city guide and the traveling set probably. The Summilux 50 will be used with the M for portraits and lower light conditions. It’ll probably stay home often. Keeping in mind every « rule » has to be broken at times 😁 Edited May 26 by thierry40
