And then they press the shutter button and discover that there is no autofocus, a feature found on every other, even the cheapest, EVF camera. From then on its a quirky, hard sell, reputation or otherwise.

And auto-aperture...

When this thread started, I had zero interest in a m-evf. I tried the m lenses on the SL but I didn’t saw a real advantage vs the SL lenses. Sold off the adapter.

Having a Q, I do like the evf experience though. So, slowly I am thinking a m-evf might be a nice addition to a Q.

I do like the experience of an evf, to see what I get, which is always a guess with a normal m.

the M11-V or M12 whatever it is will need at least this EVF or its 12m dot updated version, which sony may or may not sell to Leica....

Outside of forums like this most photographers I meet haven`t even heard of a Rangefinder yet alone understand the concept of seeing beyond the framed area.

I`m not talking about youngsters but retired folk most of whom are ex film shooters and printers.

Myself I`ve been using M`s since the early eighties and am more than comfortable with focussing with an EVF.

Perhaps Leica have reached the point when producing an RF has become less viable but they still recognise the strength of the M`s iconic shape .

Replacing the RF seems like  a win win.

It seems like a sensible business decision to slowly move away from this fifties method of focussing  and replace it with a more up to date and cheaper method .

End of the day we don`t know because we don`t have access to the sales figures and they`re the deciding factor in all this.

... thats the only build in EVF they need for the M :)

So just how many here would pay a 'similar' price to the M11 for an EVF-M? [Its unlikely to be substantially different IMO].

Not similar price, no. The way I see it is more like Q3 tech without AF and lens. So I’d like to believe it will cost less than M11, unless there’s some magic (read expensive) hybrid VF alongside the EVF.

Depends on what similar and substantial mean. Rumored price would be 7,950 EUR in Europe apparently. Would be significantly less than the current M11-P (8,727 EUR).

if there is no hybrid or electronic faux rangerfinder-patch in the EVF, then they could have simply taken the SL2/SL3 innards, having modified the fimrware to remove all AF/Video stuff and dumped them in an m11 body and released it a year ago.

The effective owner of Leica has stated that the RF M will be built for at least as long as he makes the decisions.

This rumoured EVF camera will be an addition to the range and likely sell fewer units than RF M's.

Even if they could of released it earlier, Leica have a pretty predictable strategy with the M line. It must change its clothes over the seasons to maximise sales, this model is likely the last of the M11 gen and releasing it earlier could of interfered with sales of the RF models. Now it is just, what sells, sells. If it does not do well then maybe we will not even see a version 2.  I can't see the price being less than around the 8k mark stated. It is still an M11 and to put it out for a few thousand less than the standard model would not be very 'Leica'.

IMHO most non-existing-M-owner purchasers will probably compare it to the heritage-marketed M RF and will see it as a version of a “cool” + “iconic” luxury item that they can now buy and then possibly even actually use to take photos 😉

Albeit a product that has had the "cool + iconic" removed from it, therefore not being that cool or iconic anymore...

Oh I`m sure that will be the case .

The key phrase there is "likely to sell fewer units"

If the new version is a success however it will eventually become less cost effective to produce the RF version.

That`s called covering your back.
