Because the best body and sensor stack for M lenses is an M, not an SL.

You have that already: an M. So that is my point. Why the need for an EVF? Or IBIS? That brings you to an SL.

I don’t see the added value. Just reduced value, in the case of a build in EVF replacing the Messucher

Really? - none of my manual lenses do.... M camera, M lenses, remember?

The qualification "most EVF cameras" typically does not refers to an M but to a Sony, Fuji, Canon, or Nikon.

Funny how it can be difficult to understand that some M lens users may want a mirrorless camera dedicated to their lenses.

A Leica M? Dedicated for M lenses and mirrorless since conception.

Tell that to Leica.

There is no need as the CEO has said it won't happen.

That is not to say that there will not be a new body that will accept M lenses necessarily.

The title of the thread refers to M lenses which people use on many cameras, That is what the thread is about. Not one M lens has an  automatic aperture…M lenses are used on many brands of EVF cameras, especially the SL series as they are designed for the use. Anyway I am not aware that Canon, Nikon, Sony or Fuji offer manual lenses for their EVF cameras. Using an automatic lens in manual mode is not the same thing at all. So: focusing an M lenses is not very hard for most photographers and if you use magnification if needed enhanced by focus peaking, is extremely precise.

You mean rangefinders? We have that already. What i find curious is the difficulty some people seem to have to comprehend that M lens users may not be interested, or not only, by rangefinders. For them, included old M users like me, what is interesting in the first place is not the rangefinder but the lens.

My post was a reply to your claim (it was quoted in my post):

"That is challenging on all EVF cameras and still people use them with manual lenses"

You said mirrorless. There is know mirror in an M like in an (D)SLR. I’m an old M user too. For me the lenses are also the most interesting. But what I notice in this thread is that people try to push SL tech into an M body. I don’t get that. It’s a waste of time for the small company of Leica.

Correct. So not with automatic lenses set to manual. And yes, people do use those cameras with manual lenses, be it M lenses or vintage SLR lenses or modern Chinese all- manual ones…Let’s stop baseless heckling.

IIRC, there are fully manual (third-party) lenses for Sony and Nikon (with electronic contacts) that apply automatic aperture stop-down (AASD). If I do not have AASD on a lens, time permitting, I use the widest aperture to focus. One can verify whether focusing wide open is necessary by focusing stopped down and then opening wide to verify focus (assuming lenses without relevant focus shift). I occasionally focus stopped down and take an image. If I have time, I recheck the focus wide open; most of the time, I need to fix the focus a bit.

If they apply automatic aperture through electronic contacts they are not manual lenses like M lenses.

What do the Messucher police say about all of the manual lenses that Voigtländer, TTartisan, Laowa, etc. make for mirrorless? People don’t seem all that frustrated, confused, or ruffled about them.

Yes, not all manual lenses are like M, but you talked about manual lenses, not M lenses.

Why should they? Such lenses have been part of the Leica universe for ninety years…

Now you are going to include all lenses with an AF/MF switch, I suppose.

Just saw the GFX100RF news.  Messucher police would certainly book those who've made up the false "RF".

And the f/4 lens?

Maybe that's your EVF camera...:)

Absolutely not!!! 😱

I want an M sized body with M build quality with high resolution EVF working with Leica M lenses. What I find interesting is the assumption that the EVF is implemented like all other EVF cameras.

What I would do is replace the OVF rangerfinder and viewfinder windows with camera sensors (like from a smartphone) and create a literal digital rangefinder where the input to the EVF is from those two sensors and create a digitized view that can help those with aging sight providing magnification and other highlights. It would really be a rangefinder since there is nothing that says the rangefinder has to be mechanical instead of digital. I don't really expect this but I would do this for several reasons not least is nobody can copy this just by putting an M lens on a Sony body, and it silences (somewhat) those claiming blasphemy that it's not a rangefinder.

A manual lens is typically specifying a lens without AF.

P.S.: I am aware now that a "manual lens" could also mean a lens without any automatic (like AASD).
