NEW: Leica M11 and Noctilux-M 50 f/1.2 ASPH. as Glossy Black Edition

Recommended Posts

OKAY.

Alright already.

Is young Thorsten saying that glossy black paint is Leica’s new name for black paint?  Or is it a ‘new’ paint. As I mentioned earlier the special LHSA black paint M6 was very glossy and showed every fingerprint. When Thorsten was handed the glossy black paint M11 the person handing it over was wearing gloves which was how you had to handle the LHSA BP M6.

Would love to hear “hands-on” report. 📷

I wonder if the new glossy back paint is as tough as the standard matte black paint of the M11 and M11P or if it's designed to slowly wear like previous black paint finishes. Not that I care really, I just got an M11-P and won't be getting this new one with smaller internal memory. It's just trivia I would be interested in knowing.

Paint adheres much better to aluminum than to brass.

Here's what Leica writes about it on the M11 glossy black product page:

Over the years, frequent use creates a unique patina.

Every time something rubs Leica's Steinway piano style black lacquer paint, be it your finger, a wall, parts of your clothes or 2000 grit sandpaper, the black paint will wear off. The Leica black paint's lacquer structure is wearing off faster (use dependant) and is nothing (durability wise) like the rough finish of regular "peasant" M11 in black.

At least the Glossy Black M11 is not pre-worn to the brass like that Lenny Kravitz edition a few years ago.

Well, Leica and many others thought it was a good idea and Leica just scored its 100 year high record fiscal profit so they must be doing this right.

Oh, for sure. They know they have a strong collector market that is at least as important as their serious photographer market, if not more so. Though the earnings report did highlight that Q3 sales were a big contribution to their earnings, and that is an AF P&S camera with broader appeal than the digital Ms.

THere were record earnings before Q3 as well.

After listening to Thorsten's video, two things seem clear.  He's kidding about the black paint battery cover changing everything.  And he's not quite sure what to make of this 'new' camera.

By way of introduction (since I post here little), I'm a Leica user from way back, owning the M6, R6, and R8.  I used to think $2,000 was a lot to pay for a camera body.  My how things change!

Yes, it'll wear - Leica says "over years".
