Does the 40/1.4 still suffer from focus shift? The copy i tried in the past was one of the worse from this viewpoint.

I thought the Leica and Minolta 40mm f/2.0 also struggle with focus shift?

Both lenses show focus shift to a similar degree.
f/4.0 is an aperture I would avoid on both when relying on the rangefinder to focus.

In both my reviews you can easily see it.
If someone says it isn't there, I am 100% sure that person just didn't come across it yet,
which is not that improbable, as many people use lenses either at the maximum aperture or stopped down to sth. like f/8.0 or f/11 where it already became irrelevant.

This is similar to my experience with the Nokton.

Initially (as in for about three years!) I hadn't noticed it for the reasons you mention but having read about focus-shift here in the Forum I carried out a studio based test for myself. My findings were that at min. focus and max. aperture the focus was spot on. Stopping-down to f2.0 or f2.8, however, raised the issue. Under the particular test conditions I employed(*) by f4.0 everything was just about OK as DoF veiled the worst of the inaccuracy and by f5.6 all was well.

* Other test conditions could, no doubt, produce different results.

I’m in the EU but visit London fairly often (once every month or two) if you see anything you like I can pick one up for you if wish @pippy so you avoid the duty and customs hassle.

Thank you for the very kind offer, Costa, and I do appreciate it!

As it happens I have family (in-laws) in France and the wife and I visit them several times each year so if I do decide to acquire an example I might think about looking for one during a visit. I hadn't realised that prices in continental Europe were still down at that level.

By a strange coincidence our next visit starts tomorrow(!) so I could well see what's around just out of curiosity.

The reality is, however, that as I already have the Nokton and Sonnar I should be more than content to shoot with that pairing. IMX once there is a choice of three (or more) lenses of the same f/length at least one of them will never get any use. A pity but there it is.

I will have a look when I'm over there, though, just to see how the land lies.

Philip.

What is that one lens, new or vintage, that one should mount and never take off?

My most beloved lens is not my one-camera-one-lens lens. I’ve got two most beloved lenses but if I want to travel around the world with one lens I do not choose to bring them. So I think the OLG lens is always a compromise.

Only the aperture ring has some lateral movement - any suggestions?

Mine wobbles a little but sounds way more solid than the Summarit 75/2.5 that broke on me. Do you have a video showing those lateral movements?

No video. It can be felt and heard, but not really seen.

Could be similar to mine then. There are good repair shops in Germany i seem to recall, or a workshop like Van Manen in the Netherlands could tell you what they think.

My 90mm Elmar-C arrived tonight. How small it is!!!!! 229 EUR.

It feels so Leica-ish. Delicate and small.

The Elmar-C I've used for many years has a very slight front-to-back shift of the aperture ring if you pull in both directions. I've never noticed it and consider it normal.

As I get older, I don't enjoy as much switching lenses. I also found over the years that you can shoot pretty much anything with a 35mm lens, just a question of being creative and moving around when another lens would be more natural.

My vote goes to the 35mm Lux Asph, any version I guess. A speciality look at F1.4 and a modern rendering at all other apertures, without ever being too contrasty. The pre-FLE version which I own can be found at a decent price, in Leica standards at least.

In short, my EDCL for Leica M series is Apo-35 at the moment.
Ultimately, the best lens for everyday carry depends on your specific needs, the type of photography you most frequently engage in, and your personal preferences regarding weight, size, flavor, taste and budget.
For users of Leica M, SL, or CL series cameras, certain lenses might be more suitable than others.
In my case, the Apo-35mm lens fits most of my use cases when using the Leica M series, but this is a personal preference for now.

Actually, this thread has opened my eye for the 35mm summilux pre-asph. I wonder how big of a difference it is from 35mm summicron ASPH

Do you mean pre-asph or pre-fle? If pre-asph it is another world. Genius imperfection vs superb quasi-perfection 😉

I have both.  The 35 pre asph lux is very unique compared to the current 35 cron.  To me the cron is a solid modern lens in it's rendering at all apertures.

The pre asph lux is one I regard as almost binary (at least my particular one).  From f 1.4 - 2.8 it is very different than f 4- 8. At Small apertures the rendering is  not exactly modern either.  Big apertures ... well for me f/1.4 isn't all that useful.  The lens starts at f/1.7 for me generally.

There are tons of discussion about the 35 pre asph lux though.  You'll see...
