What does the group think the SL3-s will be priced at?
Robb

The SL2-S was priced a couple of hundred pounds below the SL2.

Is there industry convention that a higher res body must cost more than a low res equivalent? Even if the low res body is more practical/desirable/popular?

If the sensor is a new generation with better PD AF, faster read-out, as well as better low light performance, then Leica might feel justified in charging more this time.

If it is in the region of 30mp, it could be a version of the one in the a7iv. Seems to be a very well received sensor if so. My guess is that it will come in under the price of the SL3 but not by a huge amount. Not so much due to its capabilities but just because of market perception that higher mp = higher price.

i don't believe 30mp. Panasonic rumors say 24mp https://www.l-rumors.com/

Sony stayed 12-24mp in very long time. FX3 is only 12mp.

Beef up the internal processing power. More bits and depth like BlackmagicRAW/Prores/ARRI profile.

Wanna more mpx? SL2, SL3.

A higher-resolution sensor is more expensive than a lower-resolution sensor. A higher-resolution camera may also need more memory and processing to handle more data.

A 24MP stacked sensor like the one in the a9III would be nice, but I am not sure it is available for other clients. The 33MP sensor is the same generation as the 60MP sensor, so it makes sense for SL3-S to use it if it stays with Sony BSI sensors.

Hopefully SL3-S comes with a faster 24mp sensor compared to the one used in Lumix S5II, having a read out/rolling shutter of (about) 22 ms. And an electronic front-curtain shutter, please...

If it is stacked, no EFCS would be necessary 😁.

Isn’t the Apo Summicron 24mm still missing? One would suppose that this would be the next SL lens as it was included in the original roadmap

I got tired of waiting and picked up the 21 APO.   I had reservations because I had tried the SIgma 21 ART 1.4 and the stretching at the edges was a dealbreaker for that lens.  The 21 SL is about as perfect a wide angle as you could ask for.  It acts more like a wide normal.  With the SL3 I can easily crop an image to 24mm (and even ~32mm in APS-C mode in a pinch is fine) and it easily matches the image quality of the 35 and 75 APO.

I'm perfectly happy with my SL3, which wasn't exactly the case with when I had the SL2.  I ended up using the SL2-S as my main camera for a few years and loved it.  I'm tempted by the SL3-S.  If I can get richer low light files and better AF performance, especially in low light, it may be worth exploring since I had always found that with the APO Summicron-SL lenses and the 24MP sensor of the SL2-S I could still crop significantly without too much image compromise, as it rendered like a much higher resolution image.  With the SL3 I always keep things in the mechanical shutter range because even on dynamic portraits I could see facial distortion from rolling shutter.  I do more candid and event style shooting than studio or "slow" work, so it may be worth grabbing.

A rolling shutter speed of 20+ ms of the SL2-S and SL3 sensors are (much) too slow; I therefore hope that SL3-S is much improved in this respect. Plus improved continuous AF, as well as higher max fps with AF.

I don't think anyone - besides Sony and Canon - has a stacked censor ? I don't think either Canon or Sony will sell it to anyone at this time. It's really a shame I wanted the SL3s to be a really good video camera. And AF like the competitors. It will probably be 4-5 years before Sony sells the stacked censor when they have global censor in all their cameras.

Nikon Z9/8 are stacked. Nikon Z6 III is partially stacked.

All here dreaming about stacked sensors and fast readout speeds... when has Leica come out with something beyond what other companies are offering?

101% it will not be stacked, nor have fast read out speeds nor it will have great autofocus.

  • M9 (first full frame mirrorless, long before Sony, let alone anyone else)
  • SL (best EVF)
  • Q (no equivalent concept even now)

...then one can argue subjective opinions about the SL Apo lenses, colour science, UI etc

I suspect you mean sensor tech and AF, and I would agree with you. It's an important aspect (everyone has their favourites), but not the only one in the workflow involved in taking a photo.

But I can't think what they could produce in the SL3-S that is likely to be startlingly new - I would have expected that in the SL3.

Leica (Leitz) also developed the first AF tech, but sold it to Minolta.

Let’s also not forget the 35mm camera format popularization.
