rclompus Posted September 11, 2024 Share #1 Posted September 11, 2024 Advertisement (gone after registration) I use rear lens caps for all my Leica & Voigtlander lenses. Labels of the focal length/max aperture are put on each cap to allow for quick selection from a camera bag or humidity controlled storage cabinet. Leica’s rear cap (14379) is best in class. It is made of plastic that is just a little bit flexible so it grips the lens mount when tightened and it stays on. Voigtlander’s lens caps are made from a more rigid plastic that doesn’t stay on the rear of M mount lenses. Leica’s price for a rear cap is $45 USD. I have tried generic rear caps from eBay and Amazon without success due to the plastic material being very rigid - similar to Voigtlander’s caps. I have not tried Light Lens Lab’s rear lens caps. Has anyone found an aftermarket rear lens cap that fits as well as Leica’s cap that doesn’t cost $45 each? Many thanks, Richard Clompus Welcome, dear visitor! Overgaard Posted September 11, 2024 Share #2 Posted September 11, 2024 I have a number of 'nameless' caps from somewhere, or maybe old versions. Hate them, they don't sit that well and fall off. The original hard plastic you show here, really sits well and doesn't fall off in the bag. There must be a dealer somewhere who has a lot extra of them in the back who will sell you 10-20 for a good price.
graphlex Posted September 11, 2024 Share #3 Posted September 11, 2024 Zeiss used to sell a ZM-branded lens cap for M-mount lenses.
farnz Posted September 11, 2024 Share #4 Posted September 11, 2024 For many years I have used aluminium rear lens caps in either black or silver, which stay on very well. They add no more weight than a plastic cap and, to my mind, offer far better protection to the rear element and it would be easy to add an identifying label if I chose to. I found them on ebay and I feel sure that they'll still be available. From memory they cost around £10 each although they're likely to be a little more expensive now. The seller also offered deep caps for lenses that protrude a bit. Pete.
TomB_tx Posted September 12, 2024 Share #5 Posted September 12, 2024 (edited) There are several designs for 3-D printed M caps on the "builder" sites on the web. Most I've found fit loose, but can be scaled to a snug fit, and can select a plastic material to suit. very cheap to make, and if you like darkroom work you may find 3-D printing relaxing as well. You can also make them in different colors to ID lenses. Here are a couple I've tried that fit snugly after a slight "Z-axis" rescale. (Don't mind the color - just tried the material.) BruceRH Posted September 12, 2024 Share #6 Posted September 12, 2024 I found these metal lens caps on eBay. They are very well made, light weight, fit perfectly and not overly expensive. https://www.ebay.com/itm/363436383909 Welcome, dear visitor! jankap Posted September 12, 2024 Share #8 Posted September 12, 2024 One should keep the original lens caps in the cupboard (or in the safe). I lost the original of 35 Euro and I bought a 3 Euro one on Ebay. And now I want to sell the lens.🥲
lct Posted September 12, 2024 Share #9 Posted September 12, 2024 Voigtlander bottom lenscaps are my favorites as LTM to M converters are easier to unthread with them.
