Hi everyone,

short summary upfront.

leica user since approximately 20 years.

mostly analogue with M2,3,4,6,7.

also M8.

getting of course older by the day like all of us, hit 60 a few months ago.

when I take a look over the shoulder I see that actually I can’t distinguish, any of my photographs actually being taken with a Leica lens.

i don’t have that many printed, maybe 100 over the years, and some were Leica and some were Retina, Nikon, Olympus XA etc..Oh and Rolleicord.

thinking earlier and over the past period I begin to recognize that the Leica passion I have is not about the photographs they make, but about the cameras and lenses themselves .

i love them, I fondle them, but , and it’s a big but, I love my photos taken with all the above mentioned brands.

absolutley no difference whatsoever in admiration.

so, short summary, I am definitely a Leica fondler, and will surely continue to be one.

I hope some of you feel the same ..

let me know ..

But if I had to keep only one, it would be the Retina 🤷‍♂️ ( I mean Rolleicord ) or whatever 😊

no fondling but just does the job ..

have a great week

Andy

I only fondle things that can fondle back.

If i had such things i guess i could fondle them but i haven't, so i only fondle humans and possibly cats.
Are Leica cameras some sort of cats? 😉

I think what you're saying is that you really like how the Leica cameras/lenses feel to use, which is a perfectly acceptable reason to use them.

Cameras are tools essentially and just like many other types of equipment people will have a preference of what they use for personal reasons. A musician for example will prefer one instrument over another, even though they can both produce the same sound, maybe that musician gets a better sound out of the one they feel most connected with.

If you care about the photographs more than the camera or lens it's liberating to be interested in what other camera makes and types can do for your photography, but it doesn't mean you can't favour a brand or love the looks of one more than another, even to the extent you just want to pick it up and look through the viewfinder for the hell of it. In my case that would be a black paint MP, but it's the least used Leica camera I have, I'd rather use an M4-P, or an SLR, or if ultimate image quality was needed medium format or large format, and they can all be fondled. I love my Nikon lenses as much as my Leica lenses, and out of all of them the only one that earns a favourite status is the 50mm Summilux ASPH. I guess it's what you keep coming back to that counts even if it's a fine margin, and that for me makes Leica the most fondled cameras.

A film camera is just a light box. I happen to like using the Leica M better then any other film camera. So yes, I need to enjoy what I use. I also like to have something nice to look at, particularly if carrying around all day. Which is why I picked Hasselblad over Fuji for MF digital.

So jewellery factor is 10% but functional is 90%

Whereas my Rolex is 90% jewellery and 10% functional, as a £4.99 digital watch from amazon is much more accurate 🙃

Even the best photographers can become camera geeks. Check out William Eggleston's Leica collection:

But it's probably best not to become too attached to these glorified light-tight boxes.
