What jumps out at me is the reduced - by 3mm - height of the new camera. This would finally bring it down to the dimensions of an M2/3/4/6. If they could get the screen flush instead of protruding, as it has on every digital M so far, they might be onto a winner.

If they could also make a kind of curtain that you could pull in front of the screen and hide it completely, I would also consider such a camera. It could mean the end of the D-series though.

Furthermore, to make the RF viewfinder into a hybrid viewfinder might be a technical challenge that is not feasible  . . .

Leica tried, as Stefan Daniel has explained, calling it a “no-go” that resulted in unacceptable compromises to both viewing approaches (maintaining RF) given space constraints.

These rumours are by no means the next M12. That would be too radical. It may be an EVF variant of the M or a completely new system that can take M lenses, but it will be a new type of camera where Leica can experiment with new features and usability ideas. But the M is the opposite of "fancy new stuff, let's go wild".

I’m actually struggling to think of anything that currently exists, that is feasible to fit in an M and which I actually miss having.

I suppose Ibis is the obvious one, but I’m unsure whether it would fit and whether the hit on battery life would really be worth it.

Absent that, the M11-P has about everything I can imagine needing right now.

Maybe a mechanical magnification at the press of a button in the viewfinder for the rangefinder patch. No idea if it could be done.

Also, getting rangefinder guides as single focal lengths instead of pairs.

I just hope Leica dose not pull any of the "New Saab", "New Coke" or "Playboy without nudity" concepts with a future M12. History has taught us that this would be the toxic and potentially fatal losing existing customers in a desperate attempt to please new ones formula. Fingers crossed.

At this point it's all speculation.  Disturbingly, the speculation about the M12 does not seem to be headed in a healthy direction:

JMHO but if Leica makes this camera a TL12 rather than an M12, we are all going to regret it - including the Poo-Bahs at Leica HQ in Wetzlar.

It's Leica Rumors, for Pete's sake 🤪😳😁😝  - the same folks who were sure there was going to be a compact digital M in 2017.

That turned out to be the CL (APS sensor, EVF, L-mount) - nothing to do with M, except it could use the M-L lens adapter

BUT! the Rumors gentleman is clever. He intentionally puts out overblown and erratic rumors sporadically so everybody’s talking and mulling about it. Marketing 101.

He just raids what he reads here.

Or he is perhaps Ferengi and this is "Rule of Acquisition" Nr. 12 :)

But if I look at the posted pictures of the viewfinder (I hope they are fake) , it will be the first time in M-History that the view through the "nornal" viewfinder could be unsharp (1st row) - shocking. And the wamdering hybrid square is always at the wrong point (like the SL).

This requires all new software - and software "never failed" in the M11 ... very interesting. Lucky who has a M2 :)

Oh I don't know...

I think a "no buttons on the back, no ISO dial" M12 will instantly convert the M11 from Pariah to the "last great M camera" 😀

See Fujifilm X H2 It's exactly what you're looking for.

I'll be keeping my M11-p forever since it will become a collector's item in the future . . .

Except that it isn't a Leica M. But I'm sure I'd like it if Leica managed to implement something like this in a discreet way.

This new button-free M12 sounds just like my old M11-Z concept:
