Leica owner for the last twenty years. Digilux 2 went on the fritz beginning of March. Leica N.J. turned camera around in 8 weeks. Arrived just in time for the birth of our first baby.

Should probably name the kid "Solms" or "Wetzlar", what do you think?

Thank you Leica...

I'm glad that you Digilux 2 users have had your cameras repaired free of charge.

Sadly, my Panasonic DMC-LC1 CCD failed recently and despite negotiations with Panasonic UK they do not wish to repair it at all, let alone free of charge.

Their reason? At the time I bought it the DMC-LC1 was unavailable in the UK and so I bought it as new from an eBay seller in Dubai. It arrived in original box with all accessories, apparently unused except for having been on display in a shop.

Panasonic UK inform me that any of their products bought on eBay, in whatever condition, are considered second hand and therefore not covered in any way by their warranty.

The failure was almost identical to the behaviour cbretteville describes above, and the serial number is in the range mentioned on Panasonic Canada's page Important Notice - Digital still camera, note that the range should be read as A4SYxxxxx - G4SYxxxxx. My DMC-LC1 has a B4SYxxxxx serial number and was bought in summer 2005.

Leica owners can therefore be secure in the knowledge that the Digilux 2 is therefore better than the Panasonic DMC-LC1 in possibly the most important way of all, the manufacturer actually supports the product!

Funny coincidence, I had a Panasonic DMC LC-1 I bought from a guy who had bought it from another guy who bought it in Dubai.

The sensor went dead ca. October 2006 and I sent it to the Danish repair sop that deals with Panasonic. They informed me a price to fix it and I answered them back that Leica did this repair free of charge.

And we left it at that.

Then ca. May 2007 the camera came suddenly in the door, repaired free of charge, with an info that Panasonic had sent out a note that they did these repairs free of charge.

Have a look here on my D2 site that refers you to the Panasonic documents: leica.overgaard.dk - Thorsten Overgaard's Leica Sites - Leica Digilux 2 sample photos and tests (as well as Panasonic DMC-LC1)

The document direct link is here: Important Notice - Digital still camera

And enclosed is a JPG of the original site of Panasonic.

Have fun with it. There's no reason why they shouldn't fix it, no matter via what routes the camera has travelled.

Also, I have two D2's and both have had their sensors replaced by now.

The last one I turned in with the Leica agent in February 2008 and got back 2-3 weeks later. Not only had they fixed the sensor, they had also fixed a lock-error in the zoom (when the lens was turned downwards, the zoom would lock around 70mm; probably because I had dropped the camera once too many on the floow) as well as fitted a new rubber eyepiece free of charge. It's taken 100,000+ files so I was a bit worn out. But they fixed that.

It's wonderful sevice and great care from Leica.

This process is moving faster, now.

I took my camera to the dealer about Mar. 15. He called me today to say it's back. He was pleased with the 7 weeks, as well. Earlier fixes took much longer.

I got new front cover and focus fix, at a cost of $240. The CLA, sensor replacement, and 1-year warranty are free.

As it's my M8 backup, it will be nice to have it back.

Regards,

My D2 is 2991XXX. number and I think the sensor died today:

At times it works but with shades of gray and blue pics.

Do we think it is the sensor?

Any recommendation for repair from Spain?

Thank you very much.

Mine didn't die as nicely as yours. Great pics!

Yes, it is the sensor. Go to a good photo store and ask about Leica service. Or search who does imports into Spain. No worries, Leica does the repairs free of charge.

My D2 is S/N 2993XXX and I have used it regularly since I bought it new in 2004.

This morning, the screen is black. It will show stored images but remains black in the picture-taking mode.

I am extremely disappointed .... this is the first camera failure I have had in 40 years (seriously) and this is the most expensive camera I ever owned.

Very bad day for me today (who's gonna tell my wife !!??)

Just a comment from the other side of this issue, so to speak.

I was recently testing a Digilux 2 with a view to buying it. After a week's trial I was convinced, I liked not only the results I was getting but the effect it was having on the way I shot pictures compared with my other compact.

So, after a bit of research I discovered this thread and began to have second thoughts about the deal I was being offered. However, a 'phone call to Leica was all it took. I gave the serial number and within seconds got the answer I wanted, yes, the sensor was replaced in February 2007 at Solms. A day later, the deal was done!

It strikes me that the only people concerned about the relative performance of this camera seem to be photographers. Friends and customers love the results it produces and seem unconcerned that the camera used 'only has 5mp'.

Seems that my Leica Digilux 2 (Nr 2993***) also has a sensor failure...

But some colours are still ok... (note: the sky is getting totally purple).

Can somebody inform that the attached picture is the Sensor problem?

Thanks Alwin
