Andy Y Posted December 8, 2023 Share #1 Posted December 8, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi there! Updated my SL2-S yesterday via the Photos App to Firmware Vers. 6.0. To my astonishment the zoom/magnification function by pressing the joystick button doesn't work anymore. If you scroll through the menu and select the joystick options, the "zoom" option for MF lenses is not there anymore. This is rather annoying when using MF lenses. The only way you can use the magnification is by using the thumb wheel. This is less than ideal to say the least. Anyone else with the same experience or is it just me being to stupid to find the right setting on Firmware 6.0 ?? Thanks for your help. Advertisement Posted December 8, 2023 Posted December 8, 2023 Hi Andy Y, Take a look here SL2S FW6.0. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Bikie John Posted December 8, 2023 Share #2 Posted December 8, 2023 Where did you find version 6? I thought the latest was 5.2, which is fairly recent. (I have just been going round in circles on the Leica website looking for details and can't find anything at all!) John

It will show 6.0 as an available update. Just stumbled over it yesterday as I was updating my Q2. From today on the firmware is now also available via the Leica website. Almizilero Posted December 8, 2023 Share #5 Posted December 8, 2023 Documentation says that the Joystick has more asingnable functions after the update. Maybe it just got reset and the zoom has to be reassigned in the menu?

The new functions in MF Mode are (AFs, AFs + AE-L, AFc, AFc + AE-L, AE-L) The "Zoom" function as previously available has been deleted and assigned to the thumbwheel.
Bikie John Posted December 8, 2023 Share #7 Posted December 8, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thanks, I just got an email from Leica with a link to the page with the downloads: https://leica-camera.com/en-GB/photography/cameras/sl/sl2-s-black/technical-specification and scroll down a bit. The release notes describe the "improved" function just as you set them out above. Which is about as much use as a chocolate teapot if you are using a manual focus only lens like a Leica M system lens! This looks like a bit of a boob to me. Thanks @Andy Y for highlighting it. John Thanks @Andy Y, John, I used the link to ask Leica if this was the case. They’ve confirmed it: the joystick can’t be used for zoom when focusing manual lenses and that this can be done via the thumbwheel. Wow! I won’t be upgrading as it takes away a necessary option for me, speaking only for myself - as a user of M lenses on the SL2-s - that’s an own goal, surely? 🤷🏼♂️

Andy Y Posted December 8, 2023 Author Share #11 Posted December 8, 2023 vor 19 Minuten schrieb huwm: I've always used one of the front buttons for magnification so hadn't noticed It`s a bummer but maybe Leica will come back to its senses and change it to how it was. This feature exited since the early days of the SL 601. If it ain`t broken why fix it? @huwm Thanks very much for your input. That's at least a workaround not to switch the hand or thumb position.
0x2102 Posted December 8, 2023 Share #12 Posted December 8, 2023 Upgraded to 6.0 and the first thing I noticed is that I cannot longer click the joystick to zoom-in (magnify) in MF mode. Customize control -> Joystick shows MF-Mode greyed out and set to AE-L. Anybody else having the same issue?

Leica confirmed to me via their ‘chat’ button that the joystick zoom function has been removed for the manual focus of M lenses. I’d prefer not to use the thumbwheel or front buttons - using the joystick for locating my focus point, then zooming in to focus: just the one button. We don’t have that option anymore. It won’t impact everyone’s process, but it does mine. Crap decision.

frogfisher Posted December 8, 2023 Share #18 Posted December 8, 2023 Wow, Leica really did this. That Joystick Zoom was simply genius for focusing M-Lenses. Please Leica bring it back
Carrot Posted December 8, 2023 Share #19 Posted December 8, 2023 I recently complained to Leica that although pressing the joystick to zoom in worked ok, you couldn't press it again to cancel magnification like you can when you assign magnifiction to a function button, you can only cancel it by half pressing the shutter release. They said they understood the point and would put this right in a future firmware update. From the sound of it, they haven't!!

No, it was via their ‘chat’ link and they simply confirmed it. I’ve not yet updated to v6 - I’ll try to work round it with the thumbwheel as you say and/or try to assign one of the front buttons. I’m sure it’ll work but it adds an unnecessary step in the process - for me anyway.
