Film is lovely but no longer a good way! I use it out of habit. Professionally stopped film 2005. I agree with your analysis of this Film. Not good for everything, but interesting to use for specific purposes. I tend to disagree with your description containing the phrase “pathetic amateurs“, too disrespectful, denigrating and generalizing for my taste. You may find the word “analog” stupid, however, besides your definition there’s another one, meaning: “something in which information is represented by continuously variable physical quantities”. And that fits in my opinion quite well as a description of photography using film.

Anbaric Posted December 2, 2023 Share #25 Posted December 2, 2023 I assumed it was here because new film should of course be shot on a Leica, and not an amateur camera like the K1000. 😇 2

My first roll will go in the camera which happens to be empty. I have several with part used rolls patiently waiting. My half frame is the worst, it’s currently at ~36 with another ~36 to go.

Well here's my take! I suppose as a professional photographer (?) and not a pathetic amateur like most of us you are entitled to your opinion about pathetic amateurs and are outraged they are stepping on your toes. So try starting a YouTube channel and if it's any good you could be earning more than doing a few weddings a month. But your comments expose your ignorance of the fact that a lot of YouTube contributors are following a fashion to overexpose colour film for the California light look which does blow out highlights. But it doesn't mean they don't know what they are doing, it's on purpose. Indeed they know entirely what they are doing, communicating with their audience and making photographs the viewers like. Pretty much like ensuring both Mother-in-Law's are included in the majority of the wedding photos (there's a free tip for you). And for the record, what's the problem with using film being 'romantic'? Are you saying people can't have dreams, or find a particular medium an expressive way to communicate?

Anbaric Posted December 3, 2023 Share #31 Posted December 3, 2023 9 hours ago, Brilliant Observer said: not interested after seeing many samples, ektar 100 is better Of course it is. But Ektar is the end product of more than 60 years of colour negative research and development by Kodak, with its once vast resources. Harman started with a small team about a year ago. Luckily they don't have to invent C41 from scratch, but we can't expect them to get near Ektar quality overnight, if that's even on their roadmap. Phoenix is an early prototype the general public would never have seen in the old days, but can now be sold because experimental films are fashionable. We already know they're not going to stop there.

pippy Posted December 4, 2023 Share #35 Posted December 4, 2023 I'm quite keen to give the film a go. As has been mentioned several times it won't be great for everything - in truth possibly not very many scenarios where it will be ideal - but it's an interesting product nonetheless. Strange that ORWO was mentioned; the most pleasant surprise I have had in recent years was when I received the prints from a VERY out-of-date roll of Porta 160 as the images had an undeniable look of 'Holiday Snaps from the 1960's' about them. Perhaps wanting this sort of 'Look' is where the Harman film will find its niche? Philip.
Steve Ricoh Posted December 4, 2023 Share #36 Posted December 4, 2023 I’m also keen try Phoenix, but I think I’ll wait until spring-time when the light is better. I also hope Harman don’t ’fix’ the interesting characteristics.
Michael-IIIf Posted December 4, 2023 Share #37 Posted December 4, 2023 Well I just had to. Which camera now? The M6 would have been ideal but I sold that. I'll try the M2. Welcome, dear visitor! pixie Posted December 5, 2023 Share #38 Posted December 5, 2023 (edited) I need to qualify! 1st I am thrilled Phoenix is available! Yes my comment on snake oil con men in YouTube stays! Except for a few, they are mostly pushing crap cameras, that are better dead. They all seem to wear a beard and hats, touches indoors! That is a sign of rudeness. My Pentax gear! Oh Amateur? Idiots! I use it still. I went to Nikon-F because it was easy to focus! My Pentax NEVER needed CLR CLA or repairs! I knew 1st name of my Leica folks and their family! Lots of cost, many times! Nikon, falls, impacts, outside happening! In short bullets flying. Rocks, bottles and general mayhem. I quit, as I have a Daughter, a son and a wife! The Pentax shown, was purchased after a return trip to Canada! My Nikons were jammed, the 105mm had dismantled, 28mm and 35mm similar. A quick purchase of Pentax K1000 with 50mm lens C$240. New. Added a 135mm Pentax and 28mm Pentax lenses for both C$75! Well used!. Oh! bought a used Spotmatic case, to ENFORCE the AMATEUR look. I am no longer doing any paid work. I am an amateur, because I LOVE PHOTOGRAPHY. There are many paid hacks! Even promoting Leica. If any Leica folks think they are good, one can use any camera kit! Minoltas are great and lenses make images awfully similar flare etc. as my Leica lenses... BW Pix Leica M6,50mm Summicron. Sepia Minolta SLR Rokkor Lens! Enjoy what you do. Welcome, dear visitor! That is a sign of rudeness. But these 'pathetic amateurs' were chosen by Ilford for their YouTube channels. They each got sent rolls of Phoenix long before it's official release, they all had to abide by strict NDA agreements (there were no leaks), they all had to use the film and give their impressions of it in secret, and they had to be ready to release those videos on the day the film was officially announced. To my mind that shows a broad base of professionalism from young kids who wear hats indoors and push crap cameras. It also shows a large measure of trust on Ilford's part for which I think they've been repaid many times over in thoughtful YouTube content, and it didn't hurt to have so many reviews on day one of Phoenix's release. jonnyboy Posted December 5, 2023 Share #40 Posted December 5, 2023 It's great to see a new film product - I was hoping it was priced closed to Kentmere films. At the current price, it seems to be a direct competitor of Kodal Color Plus 200 - which is a great film. I may give it a try at some point - or wait for the less expensive expired rolls in few years 😂
