Just saw this Nickel Rigid Summar 5cm f2 while browsing for lenses on a shops site, is that front "ring" a hood or part of the lens system?

it is part of the lens, it holds the first glas. Rare variant is black rim, holder is black painted. Black Rim is more often found within collapsible nickeled, but still a rare variant.

My Summar line up some years ago, I may have added one or two since then. I can't find the thread where I listed the details of the variants - the search feature on the forum is less easy to use than it it used to be. They include one rigid example, nickel and chrome examples with a black front ring, examples with f2.9 mark for use with the Leitz-Agfa colour system, examples with and without the infra red mark and also metre and feet scale examples as well as coated (aftermarket) and uncoated examples. Any that I have used are very fine lenses with a distinctive 'look'.

Part of the fun in collecting Leica items is spotting the different variants. The 50mm Elmar has even more variants.

This III usually has a collapsible Summar (as when I bought it), but here it has the closest I have to a rigid Summar: the Nickel Heliar from Cosina Voigtlander:
