Picked up both lenses this morning. No opinions yet except that the 21mm focuses down to about 10cm........

Gordon

So good to see the 21 finally available. Checking the spec sheet, it is still showing the weight, with and without the lens hood, as 789/1208 g. The lens is heavy enough, but the hood…….I really want this lens but the 419g hood is giving me second thoughts!  😆 Wondering if you could confirm the weight  Thanks 😂

Leica's specs say 789/839 g (without and with hood).

Wouldn't mind a 180mm f2.8 and then my set would be complete.....

Yep if that could be true, great, and while they are on it, please make a 135mm f/2 as well.

Would it be a good idea to seperate this discussion, someone is interested in this 21mm and others like me about 14-24?

I'm only interested if 14-24 flare resistant has improved, I use Sigma almost daily and it's the only downside, well not able to use filters is another. I solved it by buing a Pana 14-28 and put circular filter on it, it's the same price than to buy some clunky filter system to Sigma.

My 21mm f/4 R lens is a 'Super-Angulon', so I suspect you are right that it is the focal length that gets the 'Super' appellation.

Any Super Angulon or Curtagon appellation is a Schneider lens design. Super angulons are mostly used on large format cameras, but occasionally also on smaller formats. It is a similar lens design to a biogon. They usually have very large coverage, good edge to edge performance and low distortion. Not ideal for digital as they are largely a symmetrical design.
Leica has a long history of adding “super” to their very wide angle lenses. Lots in the R mount, for example. It just means very wide in their parlance.

I know this is not a 1:1 comparison, but I'm wondering if I should replace my Voigtlander 15mm with the 14-24.  I know the f stops are different but on the SL2-S I'm not too concerned about that.  I would really only be utilizing the widest end of the zoom. The big question is if the image quality will be the same as the Voigtlander.

Did you get the Sigma or Leica version? I was just testing both and having the Voightlander 15 III I have to say that other then the vignetting it performed very very well compare both Sigma/Leica.. I was taklen by surprise how much detail was there and color accuracy. The distortion was obvious but with few touches in Lightroom I was shooting interiors without any problem. I do see the color rendering better on Leica as well as in video (SL2S) the Sigma has more contrast which is not what I would like. The price difference now between Sigma vs Leica is about 800Eur. Leica is super silent, better build and looks like will hold its price better then SL2S which is now around 2000Eur as new. ;-(

I ended up getting the 21 APO to cover my wide needs.  I still prefer primes.  It's a fantastic lens.  Great AF performance and very minimal stretching near the edges of the frame.  My kit is now 21 APO/35 APO/50 (APO and Lux)/75 APO

Does anyone know why it's called a "super" APO?

It's because the old APO designs are now deemed inferior, and must be sold, ready for the new Super APO range. Personally I will hold out for Ultra APO but its up to you...

Dr G, there seems to be a gap between 21 and 35... I think you should give this your full attention

Yes, and it happens to be the one focal length I don't get along with - which is why I sold my Q3 ;)

I usually carry 21/35/75.  My 50s are very use case specific.
