Leica 28mm Elmarit-M 11606 - is a lens hood necessary? Plus any comparison with Color Skopar Type II?

This kind of vestigial hood is useless to prevent flare in my experience. CV and ZM hoods are often siil

My Summicron 50/2 V4 has a similar styled  retractable hood. Is this useless also? Again, not really used it much (its easy to unknowingly knock it back in) but can’t say it really helped. If it is useless as per your opinion on the CV/VM variants, then perhaps Leica is also ‘cutting corners’ on this particular lens. Or does it depend on the focal length and internal design?

I would say so about the Summicron 50/2 v5, although its hood is not as vestigial as the one you showed. The v5's has the excuse of being a built-in hood though. Now i am not a dealer of lens hoods. I gave you my advice, there is little i can add to help you.

Appreciate your input, but somethings you said and others don’t add up as I already pointed out. Accused of wasting money by not using a hood as Leica intended @250swb, when the built in hood of some Leica lenses have a hood that is ‘useless to prevent flare’ (having a similar design to their third party counterparts). Being built in does not qualify Leica from being exempt from this contradiction.

It sounds as if I can continue to create great images from the 16606 asi do with my other lenses, without fear of persistent flare like the 90 tele-elmarit without the penalty of the bulky hood, which would otherwise defeat my intended objective of being portable.
