I have repurchased an SL2-s after selling my early SL and M10.  Still have my M glass 21 mm, 35 mm, 50 mm and an early 1960's 135mm.  When I purchased the SL2-s, I bundled it with the 35 mm ASPH.  I also have a Q2.  We are going to Europe in the fall and I am planning on bringing the Q2, my new SL with the 35 mm and the 21 mm.  However, I am thinking of getting the 24-70 mm, and just leaving my 21 mm and 35 mm at home.  Thanks for your advice.

Cheers

If I would have to decide - I would take the Q2 along and leave the SL and the heavy artillery at home😉. As someone who likes to travel I came to the conclusion that it is much more fun to travel foreign countries with a light and unobtrusive camera system. Do you come exclusively to Europe to shoot wildlife? Or sports? Do you come for a paid gig and your customer needs a broad range of close-ups as well as scenic pictures? No? Then my advice would be to take just the Q2 with you - it's one of the best travel cameras money can buy, especially within old and narrow european cities.

Whatever you do - have a wonderful trip😃!!!

Jim, yes the 24-70 will be a great travel lens for your SL2-S. The Q2 will an be an important light carry and less obtrusive option to take for certain environments that you know about. I'm going to the south of France next spring and my SL2 with 24-70 & Q2 will be my core system. There is high regard for the 24-90 and it is a great lens. But let's be real here, it's a boat anchor not all that well suited for international travel issues.

I am in the south of France now and will be away for about 4 weeks. I have my Q3 with me. I can make everything I need. Without problems I can cover 28-70 at aperture 1.7. You can do the same with your Q2. Then you have the iPhone as backup. Within the range of 24-70 (with 47 MP-Q2) you are well covered. Should you be missing something, it is a telephoto more than 70 mm. But I would only use it very limited. SL2s with 24-70 will also be a nice set if you prefer operation etc. in the SL system. For me, either system would be too much equipment on a holiday. But to the question. A 24-70 is great for travel photography.

This summer I took my sl2s with small some lighter primes, a sigma C 35mm f2, leica 50mm asph f2 (non apo) and sigma 90 f2.8.

I was very happy with my choice.  Not once was I lacking IQ

For lighter carrying depending on where I was going, I would take 35 or 50mm mounted and sometimes leave all else at the hotel.

Or could take 1 of the other lenses say 35 and 90mm

Carrying 1 of the other lenses or even both in a 6L sling was more than enough and I could fit camera and both lenses into that sling.

I have the 24-70 and like the lens a lot but it is beefy carrying it around all day is a bit annoying.  While I don't own the 24-90 it's even heavier, having that as an only option is too heavy for me and I would have ended up leaving my camera at the hotel for evenings.

Obviously my setup was a bit of a hassle to swap the lenses, but it was not to bad and would definitely repeat this for future trips.  maybe swap a 35 for a bit wider to get more of a range, but I find these leica ASPH or sigma i series contemparary primes are great.

Good luck with your decision and have fun!

I am not a strong person but carried around a SL2-S with the 24-90 during 2 weeks in Iceland.
The 35mm Summicron ASPH SL and the 75 APO I left in my suitcase in the hotel and did not use them at all.
This turned out to be best solution for me, no lens changes etc.
And most important,  the images were stunning!

You have to ask yourself if you would really use all that gear, and do you want to carry it around all day?  I would figure out what you think would be the most versatile and go with that.

For a trip to a place I have to fly I just bring my Q2, a small Sony RX100 VII pocket camera, and a tablet for basic photo reviews & edits.  It's all I need for most travel/vacation photos.  It all fits in a small bag and nothing gets left behind in a hotel room.

Nobody would recommend the 24/105 from Panasonic?

It’s more or less the same size of the 24-70. Basically you sacrifice the 2.8 aperture for reach and close up capabilities. The copy I had for a couple of weeks was not sharp in the corners. Perhaps it was a lemon, I don’t know. I sent it back.

Doesn’t it all depend on the travel you intend to do?  If it is city and general touristy activities a Q will be more than enough. If you intend to do landscape nature and wildlife additionally some extra gear will be needed

I own both the 2490 and 2470 - personally for travel I prefer the 2470 because of size.

If you want a camera in size of sl2-s additionally to the Q depends on what you want to shoot, which way of shooting you have more fun, how much do you want to carry around.

I find 21mm more interesting than 24mm by the way.

I would probably bring the Q2, and the SL2-s with 2470 and maybe even the 21prime. Leave the SL2-s in the room at those days, when you want light gear, or in the evenings. Leave the Q2 in the room, when you bring the SL-S.

But only you know what you plan to shoot and how much you want to carry.

A good comfortable bag or backpack might be a factor as well.
