Great, great story and photo (although, has anyone ever seen Newman look less than fantastic? )🙂

If you ever get a chance, you must see the incredible, amazing, fantastic The Last Movie Stars, Ethan Hawke's pandemic-influenced documentary on Newman and Joanne Woodward. Newman dictated his completely candid autobiography to a ghostwriter, then decided against it, and had the tapes destroyed. He didn't know that the ghostwriter had already transcribed them! It's an amazing documentary, doing honor to Newman and Woodward even as it digs deeply into their lives and relationship.

A truly great shot of Paul Newman. And then there are folks saying you can't take sharp shots with a Leica M and a 135mm lens 🙂.

That's actual pretty funny. The only reason I stopped carrying one is because of the size. I like a small kit these days.

Nice photo of Newman and interesting story! I haven’t been at Elkhart Lake since 1984, but have friends that still go every year.

It's a wonderful track. I also haven't been since the early 90s. I used to camp there during race weekends and the parties got pretty wild.

You're right. He kept his good looks all his life. Thanks for the heads up on the documentary. I'll definitely try to find it.

So do I, but sometimes a 135mm lens provides an option no other lens (on an M) can offer. Regarding your above shot of Paul, you might have been dangerously close to him with any lens less than 135mm.

That was Paul Newman's nickname, so it's too bad this isn't in color. I shot it while covering CART races in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, in 1989 and it's kind of a funny story. I was shooting for a national publication and had what was unofficially called a "God Pass" which I was told gave me access to anywhere I wanted to go. The drivers and team owners have roped off hospitality areas which include the trailers and motor homes they sleep in at the track and I made the assumption my pass gave me access to them. I saw Paul Newman in his area talking to some people so I walked in and shot a few frames. When I had enough, I walked out and a couple of photographers who had seen this came up to me and asked me if I was crazy. I asked why and they told me Newman had a reputation for HATING photographers and they were just watching to see how long it would take for him to grab hold of me and throw me out. Good thing I didn't stay too long.

I just re-scanned the negative today after coming across it while looking for another set of images.
