One of the reasons why Apple, Samsung etc use “family” processors is that it makes it easier to move from one generation of the product to the next. If not you end up reinventing the wheel every time you change processor. Do Fuji do that I wonder with the X100 model line?

Fujifilm has an interesting way of using the camera's internal processor to convert raw files to their film simulations. I was very surprised the first time I switch Fujifilm cameras to find that older raw files couldn't be converted; you have to use the camera you shot the photos on.

The specs in the manual say USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type C up to 10 Gbps.

My mistake was not realizing that the camera was set to Apple MFi instead of Mass Storage for the connection. It works now as expected after applying the right setting

No, you're composing square.

I am surprised that the Q2M doesn't have a square option; square is ideal for BW photos.

Do you need framelines to compose?  A simple visualization IMO

Sure, but some people like to compose like that. If you're framing tight, then it is very helpful. This said, with 60 Mp, it's probably better to do that when cropping, but I have found, when shooting with certain cameras, that having the square view helps me compose better.

I agree, with 60 MP your square composition can occur anywhere in the image. A fixed frame would be quite limiting.

When I interviewed Michael Kenna, he mentioned how, when he bought a Hasslelblad, the square view changed the way he composed photos. So, for some people, it may not matter, but for others, it has value.

Of course, it is up to Leica to judge if it is worth it. With a square format camera it is different. There is no view outside the frame, which does indeed change the way you see the world. If it is just a framing guide inside a different format, I don’t know.

I wouldn't expect the aspect ratios on the Q3 to be lines in the viewfinder; I've never seen a camera that does that, other than a rangefinder type camera. They all make the change to the aspect ration live, so you only see what's in that frame. It would be great if it did show lines; as you see, you can see beyond the frame, which can be very helpful.

But how superior? Other than in low light, I would think that 60 Mp, even with the loss you get from the Bayer filter, must have a lot of detail. I'm thinking of selling my Q2M to buy a Q3 for that reason. (Also because I've decided to get rid of all my Fujifilm gear and have just one camera, to simplify.)

To be fair, pixel peepers can always find differences, but in real-world usage, how much of a difference will it make?

The Q2M exceeds 100MP of Bayer.

You are right that in real world usage, all of these cameras are plenty sharp and detailed.

Canon R series (R5/R6/R7) cameras when shooting raw, show frame lines for the aspect ratio selected with or without black bars. I like that much better than the brands that toss away data outside of the aspect ratio when shooting raw.

I would actually prefer an A5 format paper manual. It is far easier to navigate than an eBook. eBooks have their place for things you read sequentially like a novel but for reference manuals, they are far more cumbersome. Given the cost of the Q3, you might have thought that Leica could run to a paper manual rather than a downloadable file.

I have paper manuals for Q2 and SL2S which Leica sent me by post upon email request

I would expect the same for Q3?

I have asked Leica UK if I can order one (hoping to be sent one FOC).

Here's the website to order a free manual for the Q3.

Many thanks for that link. I had asked Leica UK to send me a copy and also now submitted this e-form, so I may end up with 2 copies (or none 😀). No matter, I can then keep one copy at my UK house and one in France.

PS Just had a response from Leica UK asking me to fill in the form, whose link you had already sent me.

Yes, all the cameras are great. I have compared my M10 Monochrom vs GFX100S, and fine detail at 60” prints of the same view and equivalent focal lengths was exceptionally similar, but I generally preferred the “less processed” look from the Monochrom sensor without its color filter array. I haven’t tested it properly, but tried it out several times, and it wouldn’t surprise me if the purity of capture of files off the M11 Monochrom (when combined with a tier one lens) now exceeds the apparent resolution off a 100mp color sensor.

Different processor.

That has nothing to do with processors, it's pretty much just the usual sloppiness on the software side from Leica. The operating system running on the Q2 and Q3 is the same, that's all that matters, and migrating user profiles should be a trivial task for the engineers to accomplish.

For example you can easily migrate your data from Windows to Mac or from Android to iOS and viceversa, even though they run completely different architectures.
