I have been thinking of what single improvement would make me want to buy the SL3. I concluded that it would be either a global electronic shutter or a sensor with a very much faster readout. Shooting indoors with the SL2-S as I do, I find the banding with artificial lighting a major limitation, and the cause of a lot jettisoned images, or extra processing (e.g. Lightroom masking of the background and reduce Clarity and Texture - which gets rid of it but gives a rather foggy texture).

I would welcome this above better AF - nice though that would be - and above increased resolution.

I think flip screen and a slightly improved design of the body ...

I’d be very surprised if SL3 did not have a flip screen. But I don’t expect the body to be substantially smaller. Look what happened with the Q3 design….

Just so that you know, you DON'T have to buy every new camera that is released. It's not mandatory. No one will think any the less of you and your photographs with your new camera will be just as good next year and the year after.

I know that of course, in fact when I look back, personaly I am quite more often late in the lifecycle of cameras that I buy. Quite happy with my SL2 for now, I was just reassuring myself:)

I'm feeling confident, the SL3 will :

-Have a flip out screen ( Q3 sets the stage)

-Be very slightly smaller body( as indicated by Stefan Daniel some time ago in one of his interviews)

* More than slightly smaller IMO will throw the balance off of one of the reason for me to own the SL cameras system, the SL APO primes.

**I like that Leica has created smaller/lighter SL APSH prime lenses to attract those that prefer a small lighter Leica FF interchangeable lens mirrorless kit and think we will see more of this type of lens down-sizing going forward. AKA, I'm expecting a new 100 2.8 compact macro rebadge.

Maybe. The Q3 is doing well enough against the Q2. I am waiting for the SL3S to kill off the used price of the SL2S.

The Q3 has some dramatic improvements over the Q2
Q2’s AF / face recognition is pedestrian at best thanks to the sloppy Maestro II, and even at 1600 iso noise looks very ugly. From what I’ve seen so far, the SL2-S has better low light capabilities and shadow recovery over the 60mp sensor, and AF performance is decent in single autofocus, so the gap is not that wide. And there’s also internal competition from Panasonic.

It’s likely the SL range body and lens weight and bulkiness are high on the most mentioned unfavorable list. The latest efforts with minimally lighter primes and zooms, but many being rebadged, aren’t truly comprehensive solutions for those looking for native Leica make and material weight savings.

Having sold the SL2 in anticipation of the SL3, while getting a S1r in the interim, actually gave a nice experience from a usability perspective; but having put the 16-35 and 24-90 on the S1r to do a pre trip to India check, again brought up the weight and bulk challenges that moved the decision towards the X2D and 21/35-75/120; thinking is if weight and bulk are present, mind as well get the 100mp sensor and HB color.

As latest news mentioned the SL3 has the 60mp sensor but only slightly smaller, unlikely the weight and bulk challenges are resolved. Highly questioning whether to add the SL3 or perhaps just selling the 2 L zooms and stick with the HB setup.

To me, one of the key factors to use one camera or another is the user experience and how fun and unique it is to shoot with it. I love my SL2-S because of the experience I get taking photos with it and its lenses. I've heard many comments from people telling me that the camera is mainly Panasonic internal, that it lacks a good autofocus, that it does not have a tilt screen, etc... I get all these comments, but at the of the day I really don't mind. I love the process of taking photos with it and it helps me challenging myself plus it's a great tool for what I need it for. I have it for personal and professional use and the key reason that I will care about the SL3 or SL3-S is if it delivers this such 'experience' to me when photographying.

I understand that a lot of people are anxious to get the drawbacks from the SL2 models solved (I sometimes feel a bit frustrated about them too). I think that if Leica releases a new SL model and misses on the experience, then it will follow many other camera manufacturers that might have technically amazing cameras but don't deliver the same joy of photographying the world.

It's very subjective and personal, but I will not want to have this 'experience' replaced (or sacrificed) by the latest technical innovations.
