I’ve just taken delivery of an M11D and seem to be experiencing many of the same problems described above - and maybe some new ones! Once I’d unpacked the camera  I plugged in the supplied USB cable and saw the slowly flashing green light on the base plate. So far, so good I thought. This was in the late morning. I was a little concerned that the light was still flashing when I went to bed that evening, but I thought it best to leave it overnight. The following morning the light had gone out. Thinking this indicated that the battery was charged I turned the camera on. I had attached a 50mm lens so very briefly saw the framelines but also a flashing ‘bc’ indicator. Then everything disappeared. So the battery had not charged at all. Next I tried to attach the USB cable to my phone, allowing the camera to use the phone’s battery while I set it up using Leica Fotos and hopefully being able to install any firmware upgrades that might fix the charging problem. I was able to pair my phone to the camera and was asked if I wanted to upgrade the firmware. During this process there was a message that a problem had occurred after which everything went dead. All that I have now is a reading in the bottom of the viewfinder ‘8:88’. I have emailed Leica but have only received an automated reply.

Take it to Leica Sydney, see Danny the manager, he is very helpful.

However if Leica Australia head office say its gotta go back to Germany demand a replacement straight away. Under Australian consumer law (which the germans hate by the way 😆) they must replace the camera. I've had 2 SL2's replaced.

You have a right to refuse a repair and demand a replacement. Your dealer should be handling the case.

Thanks for the advice guys. Especially the tip about Australian consumer law. I bought it from a dealer - Digi Direct, so I should make first contact with them I suppose.

Leica responded to my email with a ‘thanks for reaching out, your case is important to us, here is a case number, we will be in touch in due course, blah, blah’. That was two days ago. I don’t hold much hope of hearing from them.

European law is slightly different The seller has a right to repair but the buyer has a right to return for a refund, obviously to buy the same article elsewhere.

My camera has now been returned to Leica Australia for assessment. They have had it for about a week and I have not heard anything from them yet. I’ll keep you updated with my progress.

I’m still amazed that a camera produced by Leica can’t be charged straight out of the box. I have never experienced this with any of the other digital cameras I have purchased over the years from Canon, Sony, and Olympus. These camera have been loaded with features and extensive menus. One of the attractions of the M11-D for me was the back-to-basics aesthetic. Which makes it even more frustrating that it can’t even be charged. Furthermore this issue seems to have existed for some time, and not only has it not been remedied, purchasers such as myself have not been informed of this potential problem.

Who exactly should proactively warn buyers of potential issues? I understand that it's a frustrating situation, but proactively warning for "potential issues" just sounds silly to me. It should not have the issue (and this is not a widespread issue), and if it does it should be taken care of by the dealer. Ideally with instant replacement if it occurs out of box / within reasonable time period. But that's the same with any product from any manufacturer - you might not have had issues with other camera manufacturers, but some other people will have had issues with those manufacturers, just as you now have this issue and others (like me) have not had this issue with Leica/their M11-D.

But I would feel frustrated in your situation as well, and I hope you will get your M11-D (or ideally a replacement) back in working order very soon and then can go out and shoot, and enjoy it to its fullest!

Point taken. At this stage I am so annoyed and disappointed that I am  just shooting my mouth off, but I would still like to know why Leica haven't been able to rectify this basic fault.

Good luck, i would be either emailing or phoning and saying you want a replacement camera very soon as you may get a random email saying its on its way to Germany

From my experience they wont do anything proactive and the very last thing they will do is offer a replacement.

I have just received an email from Leica to say that their technician has assessed my camera as, in their words - DOA, and that they will replace it with a new camera as soon as stock arrives from Germany

I thought I had the same problem - M11 mono not charging via USB-C - then I discovered USB Charging was OFF in Camera Settings 😳 Don't remember changing the setting, but does beg the question why is this an option?  Why would anyone turn this OFF?

May be someone always plug to their usb port in their devices for transfers and probably dont want to draw power from the respective connected especially mobile devices?

Off the topic but I found the usb-c position of m11 is really awkward. I have to lay the camera face down or up in order to charge it. It can’t be sat right up

I agree, it's not ideal.  I lay the camera face down resting on the lens, always making sure the lens cap is on!

One of the advantages of the M is size, and of course that is also one of its disadvantages with so much tech now being squeezed into a small body.  I guess there was no other place to put the USB-C port, unlike the SL3 where it is more conveniently located at the side.  The SL3 port is also sealed and weather protected.

It is awkward but easily accessible (no fumbling with port covers), and it doesn't "ruin" the beautiful body 😁.

Most exposed USB-C ports can be weather-protected. iPhones with their exposed USB-C ports can be used for snorkeling. There are rubber plugs available for USB-C ports for those who are concerned about it.

But even if an iPhone is rated IP68 which is in a different league than any camera, it will refuse to charge when it detects moisture in the charging port.

I would not recommend charging while snorkeling 🤣.

I get what you mean: a camera with an unprotected USB-C port may not have a functional port until it dries out.
