I took 3-4 frames with my new M11 and then the camera froze. Froze as in un-responsive - even when I switched the camera off. I was about to take out the battery when the camera came back to life 30 seconds later and rolled off a frame all by itself. I had literally unboxed the camera, charged the batteries and took these 3-4 frames. No settings were changed other than using the 64GB internal storage versus SD card. ISO and shutter speed dials were still in auto (how the camera arrived). Has anybody else experienced something like this? I have a hunch it's something todo with the electronic shutter but have no data/evidence to backup that up. My camera was fine until i updated software, i now have freeze issues. Mainly when camera is no standby. i lightly touch shutter button to wake camera, then it freezes. I just got the Lexar SDXC 1800x UHS-II card. still freezes. wish i never did software update

tom0511 Posted March 11, 2024 Share #1928 Posted March 11, 2024 It must have to do either with certain use cases or with certain cameras. I dont suffer from freezing issues neither with my M11 nor with my M11Mono. I hope Leica can figur out which things produce the problem and solve it for all owners of the M11. If my hypothesis is correct, then other problems (damaged files and freezes) become understandable, since there is simply not enough processor power to execute poorly optimized program code, so parallel processes conflict, unable to complete on time. The more you demand from the camera (continues high speed, visoflex, liveview), the worse it will perform. Makes sense to me. It's pretty obvious that freezes occur when there are multiple tasks going on. Whether that's due to sub-standard code (fixable) or undersized hardware (worrying) is the real question I guess.
LikameLeica Posted March 12, 2024 Share #1930 Posted March 12, 2024 Maybe for all of us having issues and those not having issues we should start to gather our serial numbers and see if there is a range of serial numbers that seem to be more problematic than others. Have they adjusted the hardware at some point and newer units of the M11 and M11P's some type of hardware upgraded that resolves the issue? I thought my issues were going down but after this weekend away shooting with my SL2-S and M11, I am completely frustrated and disappointed that my M11 is just not reliable and causing me to miss capturing memories at key points in time with freezes and general malfunctions. You can read my historical posts where I have tried to be balanced and patient, but my patience has run out with the M11, which is so disappointing because I love the image quality and pictures when it works.

This is a great idea! Maybe you, as the author of the idea, should make a new thread? There we will collect serial numbers of problematic and problem-free devices. It is possible that we will be able to identify a pattern, and future Leica buyers will be careful not to buy a camera from a defective series. If Leica does not meet us halfway and remains silent, then it’s time to take matters into our own hands
Malvolio Posted March 13, 2024 Share #1932 Posted March 13, 2024 Does anyone have any inside information from Leica as to when the next firmware update is due to address these issues?
anbucco Posted March 13, 2024 Share #1933 Posted March 13, 2024 I had the problems last week, when using a SD-Card that I also used in my Sony A7 V R without reformatting. But when I reformatted the card using the SD Memory Card formatter (free) all problems were gone.

lldd Posted March 13, 2024 Share #1935 Posted March 13, 2024 I ran into a Leica rep at Glazer's camera in Seattle, who was there to demo the SL3. I asked about M11 issues, and without missing a beat she said they were mostly resolved and they only impacted a very small number of users. I mentioned this thread and she responded that only those with issues post, etc. Not impressed. Handed the M11 back to the salesperson, as she convinced me with her responses not to buy the camera. 7

The only way to buy the M11 now is if they agree to take it back if problems arise within a month.
Smudgerer Posted March 13, 2024 Share #1937 Posted March 13, 2024 You know, even if the complainants about the M1 are coming from a relatively few customers, even as a non-M11 owner I can see that there really is a problem with this camera and a problem that is Leica's responsibility to correct.........But Leica seems to be doing very little and too slowly too as far as that's concerned to correct the faults, perceived or not, and that as a very long term Leica M user gives me pause......No not a pause, in fact it's stopped any upgrade aspirations from the M10's that I own, why hell would I until all of this is fixed to the M11 owner's satisfaction? Maybe though it's not possible, maybe it's roots are in hardware AND firmware and only in the M12 will they be fixed with lessons learned.

This may encourage Leica to make a statement and/or become more involved in solving the problem.
John Smith Posted March 13, 2024 Share #1940 Posted March 13, 2024 I had a pre-order in for an M11-P. But cancelled it because of the ongoing freeze issues. I don’t want a camera that has some hardware electronics problem. I have pre-ordered an SL3 because of Leica’s partnership with Panasonic. No electronic issues with the SL platform.
