Bought a Delkin Black 64Gb UHS-II 300Mb/s, formatted on SD Formatter, inserted in my M11 and freeze on first start.

Then the following day, after taking a picture, the menu button was not responsive, but I could take another picture. It ended up being overexposed (2500 ISO instead of 64 ISO on the previous picture, same exact conditions).

Better to format in camera, I never trust these SD formatter apps.

Yeah, but some forum members swears by the SD Formatter app...

The technical term for that is "spitballing".

I no longer touch applications on my computer or phone not made by large, reputable developers. I especially avoid the free apps. If the app is free, then you are the product being sold.

I generally agree with you (except that some free apps are not trying to sell you anything. I use exiftool regularly). But just wanted to make sure a certain forum member will not suggest the freeze might be due to not using the SD Card Formatter 😄. I'll format my card in camera and see when my next freeze will happen 😀.

Even free apps that don't try to upsell you to the paid version can still be collecting your personal data to resell and/or skimming username and password data to sell on the dark web.

There are a few small apps whose developers seem universally trusted in every industry, so YMMV with regard to your own personal trust. I will still not use them.

Sure, but I would say exiftool and the SD Card Formatter belong to the set of trusted developers. SD Card Formatter is developed by the SD association, an American non profit who sets the standard for SD card formats. And exiftool's source code is available on Github and is used by LensTagger, a widely popular Lightroom plugin.

But sure, in general, I wouldn't run an unknown app downloaded from the web.

So Honest Question here...I have the M11 and Love it the UX and IQ.

A little concerned that I am running the lastest firmware and a 1 week old camera a year after launch and I am getting freezes. Granted I have only had 4 or 5 after a week of use but its a 9K$ camera. Should I return and ask for a new one? Is that normal at this point?

Leica said they are working on a firmware update but you may wish to check if you have a short time to ask for a refund or a replacement in your legislation.

It's a $9k camera and some users think it shouldn't be formatted in the camera? Joke's on them I suppose...

No it’s not normal.  I’ve had mine for over a year now with no problems. Return/exchange it before you are stuck with it.

While I have sympathy for the M11s and their users who still experience lock-ups, for me and others I've spoken to, 1.6 followed by a factory reset have significantly improved things. No lockups since December 28 last year, when I reported the last occurrence to Leica. That particular one was after installing 1.6 but before the reset.

I don't have a special routine for using the camera. I just format cards in the camera and switch lenses when I feel like it, with or without the viso2 - no bearing on any lock-ups before or since 1.6 for me. Just don't insert almost depleted batteries, in which the camera may decide to not complete the start-up routine.

I just swapped it out. I’m sure the next one will be fine! Shit happens in tech.

This SD Card Formatter is made by the same people who set the standard for all SD cards

If you’re having issues with an SD card, if your freezing is related to the SD card, if your SD card is corrupted, has bad sectors or a corrupt file allocation table, or you want the card to be permanently erased so that nobody can recover any files from it, then your cure is in fact the SD Card Formatter app.

Since I started formatting my cards with this app I haven’t had 1 issue with SD cards. Before they were constantly failing after a few months (corruption).

And no the cards aren’t fake. I buy them directly from Sandisk or the camera store in person.

Obviously if you’re not having issues with the SD card then it won’t make any difference whether you use the camera or the app to format. but if you ARE then this will be the cure to your SD card issues. Because, for me, after about 4 months of formatting cards in camera the card starts flaking out for me. Disconnecting randomly, making the camera freeze, etc. as soon as I do a format in the SD card formatter app the issue stops.

I also started locking the SD card when inserting it to my iPad (do the same if you have a Mac)

The person who used the app and froze after startup then wasn’t having an SD card issue so no, it wouldn’t make any difference if he used the app or not.

Add my 2 cents to the freeze issue. Got my M11 about 2 months ago but not using too frequently.

Today it froze on me while I tried to bring up LV shortly after turning on the camera. There was no LV image but I got the level tool. I could turn on/off LV (in fact only the display as no LV image). Could trigger focus assistant (but no image). Couldn’t replay image or take image. Camera won’t turn off by the power lever, can still turn on/off LV with power lever in off mode.

Pulled battery and everything back to normal (got solid red light for about 10 sec before operational).

FW 1.6, old Sandisk Extreme Pro (95mb) which I’ve used with M10, Ricoh GR and SL. Uncoded lens.

What we are saying is that when using a lens profile, the camera does some correction and that correction is baked into the RAW and cannot be removed by any software.

So, it’s different from the M10 where you can undo the corrections in Lightroom, then?

Then you are in error. Sounds funny from a retired lawyer to distinguished engineers :D. As i mentioned above, the Leica color profile can be removed in PP.

The lens corrections yes, but there are a whole series of digital manipulations done by firmware before the DNG is written which cannot be removed. That is the distinction made in the post that you reply to.
