Update:

Got my replacement M11, was packaged in August 2022. Fully charged the battery, updated the firmware to 1.6, then set all the settings to my liking.

10 minutes later, first freeze when turning the camera on. Exact same freezing behavior as before: frame lines are illuminated in the viewfinder but no shutter speed info (if shutter speed is set to auto, or no exposition info if manual). Clicking on menu works, and I can navigate. But clicking the shutter doesn't do anything. And if I open live view, a black image is shown (with the capture assistants visible) and everything is frozen. Cannot do anything, just pop the battery.

To reflect on you statement.

Are you using profiles? are you setting up the camera how you want it and saving it to a profile.

I did lots of testing with fw 1.5 and working with Leica to identify the problem on screen freezes then shooting touching the screen. they solved it in fw1.6.

I am just pointing it out because just like you I will set up the camera and use it that way. Leica was telling me that they could not reproduce it, it turn out it was happing only in my save profile and not in the default Leica profile. just worth trying to narrow the issue.

I know many of them think it is SD card. uncoded lenses. Live view. I think it is probably a bug that need to be identified.

Try one step at the time and shoot a bit before changing something else.

good luck. report back

interesting...after all, profiles could be the culprit

I changed the settings, then saved to a profile (after I already updated to 1.6). But I don’t put it back to the profile every time I make a small change. So it shouldn’t be different than using the default profile, right? Maybe you want me to reset the camera and just never save my settings to a profile?

Leica totally ignored the article. Their response:

thank you for the detailed description.
Please format the card in the M11 and see if the problem persists.
Also, we recommend using 300mb/s cards.

Anyone has a better email contact than info AT Leica-camera ?

I received this response from Leica Camera AG:

We are aware the M11 (firmware 1.6) can freeze.
Our developers are working on fixing the issue via a firmware update.
If you notice any pattern in the occurrences or any settings that the freezes occur more often with, please do let us know.

Best regards,

The last sentence does not instill confidence...

It must be frustrating. Too many reports here too. It must be a difficult issue to resolve for Leica. Many intermittent faults and bugs are. I am surprised that it did not come up in beta testing. Hopefully this issue is soon behind us.

I wonder if it were possible to make a survey here: M11 camera:

- 1) Who suffers unacceptable freezes (much too often)

- 2) Who has freezes here and then but do not mind

- 3) Have freezes very seldom

- 4) Have no freezes

I think at this point any surveys should help narrow the cause of the freezing.
to that end I would add

-5) wether the freezes are happening when using internal memory only and

-6) wether the freezes occur when there are no user created profiles in the camera

1) at least one freeze a day!!

using internal memory only, so not sure what to do.

At this point, i would reset the camera, format the internal memory, update your user profiles if you have any and if freezes are not gone i would ask Leica to replace or refund the camera if you don't want to wait for the next firmware update.

Now I removed the SD card and I plan to use it for a few days and see what happens.

One day ago I wanted too buy a new SD card from Alik Griffin's recommendation list, but today I had three times freeze with the internal memory without SD card. So one thing that can resolve I think if Leica Camera AG will understand the problem, will find pattern in the occurrences or settings and will fix with a new firmware.

Mine has never frozen since Sep 22 when I bought it - I only use the internal memory and I wonder if this is a factor

So I’ve contacted Leica UK. They have asked me to send the camera back to Germany for repair which sounds totally unacceptable to me.
I’ve just bought the camera 8 weeks ago and this does not make any sense. I’m gutted by Leica response.
How on earth can I accept to repair a brand new camera (worth £8000) especially after Leica admits there is an issue they know about?

Shouldn’t they offer to replace the camera no questions asked?

Anyone else had the same response from Leica ?
