I don't think counting cameras with problems this way tells us much about how common the problem is, because people are more likely to post here if they have an issue than if they don't - you'd need a random sample. But it's still a cause for concern that 3 have turned up in a short space of time. And it's not as if Leica have never had this problem before - there have been intermittent issues at least as far back as the M4P, apparently including a whole batch of pressure plates in the M6 Classic Wetzlar days. Checking for this problem ought to be basic QC for a camera as expensive as the M6 reissue. There are any number of other cameras from various manufacturers, most produced in much greater numbers and sold for a much lower price than the Leica, where you never hear about film scratching, except when grit gets into the body (which does not seem to be the problem here). Perhaps some designs, including Leica's, are more vulnerable to problems unless everything is done perfectly.

I have to agree with all that. Just one defective camera is one too many. We also need real evidence of those defects, Huss has provided that but all other cases are just hearsay. The two that I have mentioned are just that, the owners say that they have no problem but I have no way of knowing if that is true, they could be just "Leica defenders". As to QC I am reminded of the gold "passed" stickers that Japanese cameras carried at on time, they meant nothing at all so, it seems, nothing much changes.

I don't think there is a design issue here.  Because if there was all of them would scratch.  And none of my other Ms scratch.  Or any of my other cameras! Ever. It is a parts supplier issue and it really looks like shoddy pressure plates are at fault.  The frustration is that this problem seems to be re-occuring, when one would think that if it happened once, Leica would make sure that was the end of it.

I do agree though that forums attract people with complaints looking for solutions, it's the nature of things.  I am really looking forward to getting my M6 back in 2023 (!) as it is a gorgeous and delightful camera to use.  Like all Ms.  Which is why we work through problems, and why I did not want a refund.

I have to agree that it is a supply issue and that has happened too many times in the past, not just with Leica. Hope you get the M6 back soon.

I want to go deeper into this topic with my M6: Do you see the scratches on the undeveloped film? One scratch or many? In the middle or upper/lower area? Over the whole film length? Emulsion side? With every film type? What serial number (+/-)? Thanks.

@Huss: You mentioned two other new M6: You know this exactly or only by (anonymous) communication?

Threads don't close unless they descend into flame wars or go off forum limits. They last as long as anyone wants to post.

Other misconceptions (common across all internet forums): no one owns a thread or decides what can and can't be posted (certainly not the person who started it); the thread title is only a rough guide to the content of the first post (and sometimes not even that) - thereafter they go where the spirits of the internet take them.

Not sure why this thread should be closed before there is a resolution with explanation.

Anyway, it's with Leica now and maybe I'll get lucky and it comes back quickly in tip top condition.

:)

That was done with my new M6. No processing errors. A continuous scratch on two films at the same height

Oh man, so sorry yours does this too.

This is unacceptable.

So far we have 7 new 2022 M6 reported on this site.  4 scratch, 3 do not.  I know there are at least two more 2022 M6 here - reveal yourselves to let us know whether your camera is ok!

So far, the scans I got back from Silbersalz do not show scratches - I am waiting for another 3 rolls to be developed (maybe this or early next week) and the negatives to be returned then.

Will keep you posted...

No scratches. Great!

It seems you have a shutter issue with your camera, based on that thread you just started.  So even if you do not have a scratching 2022 M6, you still have a defective one.

Also... you need to check your negatives themselves for scratching (and the shutter issue) as commercial scans use software to remove dust/scratches from the scan.

This is Digital ICE (Image Correction and Enhancement) software, which can 'heal' scratches on your scans.  It only works with colour film, which it seems is what you use.  So - check your negatives for scratches and get back to us! Also, get your shutter fixed

Will do, scans should be on their way already!

Slowly but surely getting tired of Leica… 4 cameras, each at least once at customer care in just 6 years. The M11 3 times already. Now the M6 which I was assuming does not offer that much potential for defects due to the simplicity and experience with analog cameras. Just annoying and sad for such a company.

what I also find very inappropriate, that they always act as if this is the normal process. New camera directly into service. No apologies, no goodies. Nothing. In the end the working camera is more important but customer centricity looks way different for me. Their customer experience is still from the 90s…

I self-developed two rolls on my 2022 M6 and it looks ok so far. Before the first roll I took a small strip of film and rubbed it on the backing plate to make sure it didn't make any  scratches. Given all the reports it's probably the first thing I would do now with a film M.

Tthe 90s weren´t that bad. More technicians, less marketing. But if customers are willing to pay the price...?

Very unfortunate. Was this along two entire rolls or two frames?
