That's the first time I've read that it wasn't a cost cutting measure.  Everywhere else says the move to zinc was to save money, which makes sense from a production point of view (machining brass takes more time and resources than casting zinc).

Leica made a big thing about changing to zinc at the time. Zinc casting is very cheap in large quantities but when it comes to the relatively small numbers now produced and the restrictions in producing special editions etc. milled brass works out cheaper.

Why not just make the top plate from the same materials the M2, M3 and M4 were made of? My M2 and M4 doesn't suffer from those "bubble" problems and they're both from the 60's.

If my reading of the problem is correct, some brass top plates of the M4-2 and early M4-P were not up to standard and were made of a softer grade of brass than the German made M4s. Leica heralded the fact that a cast zinc top plate would be stronger and, thus, solve the problem and would withstand knocks more effectively. Some of the early zinc castings gave more problems but this was quickly overcome. With the introduction of the M7 and MP the top plates were again made of brass but, this time, milled by a CNC process which gives them that sharper profile.

Hey, it has been too long since we last talked! I must say those are beautiful photos of your M6 and the watch!

I will resize a few photos and post today, time permitting. Unfortunately, my watches don't measure up so it will be without my watch! :-))

Well these pics were really for a watch forum photo contest (themed "things you love" - must be watch related), but the only ones I have of my M6 so far  :D

If I could love a "thing" I suppose those are two of my prized possessions.

I have owned and played with quite a few M cameras, including the M3 and digital Ms. The Classic M6 for me is still the best, there's something about this camera that makes it feel just right. At least to me. Nice ones here.

Yep - I bought it new-old stock a few years ago and sent it off to Leica for CLA as I thought the grease might have hardened over the years of non-use. and had it engraved at the same time. It turned out that they still honoured the 5-year guaranty, so the grease renewal was free.

I just pressed it into service  as I want to do some film work this summer, and it has its third roll (XP2 Super-400) ever in it now.

Jaapv,

Nice M6!!!

Mine is in similar mint condition but different as it is a Big Logo M6. I would love to have engraving on the top like yours.

How would one go about getting it done by Leica? Any idea on cost?
