MontuckyLow Posted November 29, 2022 Share #1 Posted November 29, 2022 Advertisement (gone after registration) I’m in the market to get back into a film M. I have enough cash to either buy a used 35 summicron ASPH and a used M6 non TTL .72 or a used black paint MP. I currently have a 50 summilux asph. So, adding the 35 would be nice (my favorite focal length) Option C would be get the MP and sell the 50 lux and get a 35 chron with that money. Although, I don’t like the idea of parting with the 50. I feel like the no brainer would be to go the M6 route. Can anyone talk me out of that and push me towards the MP? thanks!

Sorry, but we cannot take the burden of the decision from your shoulders😉. Edit: One possible reason to get the MP could be that the MP is maybe relatively new and is still under warranty. If this is the case I would say get the MP. Edited November 29, 2022 by Knipsknecht
Huss Posted November 29, 2022 Share #3 Posted November 29, 2022 (edited) Get the MP. It is a current production camera with a superior viewfinder, construction and metering, and all parts are available for it in case something fails. Use your 50 Summilux Asph - an all time great - save up to eventually get a 35 Edited November 29, 2022 by Huss

Ask your brain why it thinks buying a used, older M6 instead of a used, current production and more stylish black paint MP is good advice.

Same question I would have. Essentially same but updated viewfinder, parts etc in MP. Also if you are comfortable and can handle shooting w/o a light meter, try the MA… I find shooting the MA is a better overall experience then using my M6…

Fair enough. I only say no brainer, because I’d be able to get a really nice lens to use right away. but I think spending the extra money now and saving for the lens makes more sense. thanks for your reply! Mute-on Posted November 29, 2022 Share #7 Posted November 29, 2022 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) Black paint MP. Why? It’s black paint. It has a better viewfinder. It has a (currently) repairable light meter. It’s black paint. It has no plastic in the advance lever. The top and bottom plates are brass, not zinc. It’s black paint. I have an MP. It’s not black paint, but it’s almost as nice to use as my M2. Edited November 29, 2022 by Mute-on 1

Dirty little secret.. buy a used 7Artisans 35mm f2 for under $200 and use that with your 50 Lux while you save up for the 35 cron. Sell it for what you paid for when you are ready for the Cron. It's actually a very good lens!

Also if he got the Skopar, he may run the risk of being happy with it and not wanting anything else.
madNbad Posted November 30, 2022 Share #13 Posted November 30, 2022 Buy the MP and get a Voigtlander 35 2.0 Ultron ASPH. They even come in black paint over brass.
grahamc Posted November 30, 2022 Share #14 Posted November 30, 2022 + 1 for viewfinder. I have both and find the rangefinder patch is more contrasty with the MP. So I find it noticeably easier and definitely the camera I’d grab if I was taking only one
a.noctilux Posted November 30, 2022 Share #15 Posted November 30, 2022 MP was good, M6 I still use are as good with some bonuses, plastic articulate wind-on lever more comfort and slanted rewind crank. Not one can be replaced by another, just taste differently. M-A /M4/M4-2/M4-P/M2/etc. are other possible choices
lmans Posted November 30, 2022 Share #16 Posted November 30, 2022 (edited) I have both an M6, 1980s era…..And an MA. The difference in rangefinder contrast is pretty obvious, especially in lower light/shadows. Leica upgraded this feature in the MA/MPs and newer M6, so I would suggest one of those cameras over an older M6. Don’t get me wrong… I still will keep my older M6 but see enough improvement on the MA to make it my ‘go to’ camera. Suggest you get the MA or MP /new M6 if you absolutely can’t shoot w/o the light meter crutch…over an older M6. Huss Posted November 30, 2022 Share #17 Posted November 30, 2022 This 35mm is meant to be very good. Use it until you can get a Leica lens. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4WWlKY9neyc

Here's a suggestion for you: Buy the MP and use it with your 50mm summilux now and you'll never have that niggling feeling that you did the wrong thing, which you will if you buy the M6. You can also wait to find out how the new VoigtlanderVM 35mm f1.5 Nokton ii asph Vintage Line pans out, bearing in mind it's about 50-60% cheaper than a used 35mm summicron asph v1 and looks promising. edstock Posted December 1, 2022 Share #19 Posted December 1, 2022 Maybe just me but the idea of putting a cheap Chinese lens on a Leica causes me to shake my headRegards the used M6. Why buy used when you can get the current new M6. As to lenses I can think of some famous photographers who used nothing but a 50. If you're use to that angle of view stick with it. Danner Posted December 1, 2022 Share #20 Posted December 1, 2022 (edited) IMHO, lenses are more better than bodies. Given your budget, I would keep the 50 Lux, buy the 35 ASPH, and buy a clean used M6 (there are many of them out there at competitive prices). Why blow most of your budget on a new M6 (US$5300), when, probably, you will get relatively little use out of a film body. How much film do you think you will shoot?
