I emailed Leica a few days ago.

I specifically explained that it was not vignetting due to light falloff but encroachment of the hood onto the corner of the image when a filter is fitted. Still awaiting a response but I did send it on a Friday.

I'm sure Leica is aware of the issue by right now but I can't imagine an easy solution for this. Perhaps they are trying to ignore it and see if the chatter goes away.

One idea would be for Leica to trim down the supplied rounded hood making it shorter. I know this works with third party metal hoods.

One of the others reporting the problem said it was forwarded to the "lens developers". Unless they tell you they sent your inquiry on, it's not gotten past the email gatekeeper that answered.

Sometimes my emails to them got forwarded on right away, but at least one took a few rounds of back-and-forth explanation before they understood and sent it on to the engineering team (as it was a firmware issue).

My last reply also said that my inquiry was sent to "development".

Is it a significant crop to remove the vignetting?  I was looking forward to lens until reading this thread.

With the hood, I tested it with the BW thin filter, and it's a very small vignetting, that can be easily cropped. That being said, I do not use the hood and the lens has (like most vintage lenses) a normal vignetting that can be corrected on Lightroom if one wants (without having to crop the picture).

It's a great lens, the hood issue, while not ideal, is not a significant reason to not purchase the lens, unless you MUST 100% use a filter and a hood at all times. You can do the following with no negative impact to your photos, and still enjoy the amazing reissue:

  1. Use any of the hoods without a filter
  2. Use a filter without any of the hoods
  3. Use a filter + a 3rd party slimmer hood
  4. Use the lens without a filter and a hood

Here's how it looks shot with a filter wide open, no hood :D The most important is the rendering, and to me its a perfect rendition of the original lens, which is now unattainable to most given the price / condition.

Don't let this discourage this from buying the 35/1.4 SR reissued. It's just something to be aware of when using filters. I absolutely love this lens and have been shooting with 35/1.4 v2 copies in the past.

Agreed.  I’m very happy with it otherwise.

I’ve received no response from Leica a week after my first email.  Have followed up with another expressing my displeasure with the lack of any response, even just an acknowledgement of my first email.

My SR reissue has the wobbly aperture ring as well.  I know this has been discussed here, do we have any idea if most of the re-issues have this problem or not.  I saw the response from Leica above, but it would be good to know if the issue exists on 80% or 20%. Is there a way to take a poll on the forum?

Mine is wobbly. I assume they all are?

depends how wobbly it is, if you can show it in a video it might be easier to see if it's normal or not.

I just noticed that my round hood (when attached directly to the lens) causes viewfinder blockage. Is this a defect with my lens and hood? The same hood has way less blockage if I use a B+W thin clear filter because it rotates the threads a bit more (dumb luck is my guess). Of course then I get the hard vignetting problem. @Fred Mirandaor anyone can you please confirm if you have this problem? At this point I'm not going to use hood with this lens. It's simply funny that I paid for two beautiful hoods that I'll never use.

Is this the wobble that we are talking about? The aperture ring has some play in it. The video makes it sound loud, but in real life it isn't. Probably because I held the microphone very close to the aperture ring.

The aperture ring on my reissue has ( I thought) none of the issues I’m reading and now seeing here, rotation is smooth using either tab.   When placing force on the tabs in a non-rotational forward-back direction I can feel some play, maybe 1mm, the ring then returns to seating position and is again smooth with proper rotational forces, good drag and the detents keep the ring as set until I place rotational forces again.  Is this what is  meant by those with the issue, non rotational forces movement?

Surely a degree of viewfinder blockage is par for the course for any 35mm lens with a hood on a Leica? It's just something you learn to live with.

It`s the same with my lens. The old copy didn`t have this.

This is normal. Once you get used to it you ain't notice the blockage. It does not disrupt the picture taking process

Why build big vent holes and then not properly align them with the window? Did you look at my two photos? This seem like a manufacturing defect to me. The hood threads appear to be misaligned by about a quarter turn. Hopefully someone like @Fred Miranda can confirm on their copy if the hood vent holes are properly aligned or not.

Mine has a bit of play in the non rotational direction (shown in my video) and a similar amount in the rotational direction. Drag and detents work well. The play in both directions is at most 1mm like you said. I believe this is “normal” for this lens and part of the design.

I've noticed with some copies (like yours), when screwing the rounded hood, the opening would not end up in the right position for RF focusing, so it seems to vary from copy to copy. My personal copy allowed the hood to be screwed in right position for the RF but I've tested a loan copy which it did not.

I would guess the issue is with the hood and not the lens but I'm not sure.

My personal copy was back-focusing slightly, had stiff focus rotation towards the infinity position and also wobbly aperture ring. I sent it to New Jersey a month and a half ago and now it's in Germany. Leica told me they didn't have the necessary tools to adjust it in the US...
