Thnx, it looks very slim indeed, will probably order one.. although I already got used to using the lens without hoods, I really like how it flares as in my eyes it matches perfectly the wide open glow.

Waiting for your feedback if Leica NJ can easily tighten the aperture ring a bit. I’m ok with the focusing ring, it reminds me of my 50mm Summilux ASPH when it was new so I expect it to get smoother by itself with usage.

The original Hood is the traditional version, which is incompatible with modern filters E46 etc. This is the reason why Leica added a second hood which is compatible. I use this for "normal" use.

Didn't Leica re-design and replace the hood for the black chrome 50 Summilux which had a similar problem with filters?

The filter/hood issue will not be any great concern to Leica. Historically, filter attachment is an afterthought, perhaps rightly so. Leica prioritizes IQ, size and viewfinder blockage.  I could go on about current Summiluxes using series filters but won’t delve here. Suffice it to say this is and will continue to be the Achilles heal of our beloved M optics. 
 

I was lucky, my copy is solid with perfect focus, this is a rare occurrence for me, the focus issue requires a trip back to Leica with most lenses new or used.  For mechanical issues, loose or wobbly focusing and aperture rings, Leica New Jersey has returned items in the past with minimal improvement requiring (insisting) that they be sent to Germany for proper repair.  The downside to this is months, oftentimes close to half a year of time.  Early adoption is fun but has its risks…once sorted the lenses perform like no others continuing decades later.

If you want a Leica M lens to come back perfectly, just pay DAG to adjust it. For me it would be worth the saved time and frustration even if I had to pay.

Yet I have only used filters (yellow and orange) for b/w images. Couldn`t see more vignetting than without the filters. I don`t use UV or skylight filters, so can`t figure this out.

IIRC, it varies depending on aperture and focus distance.

Again, the round hood also causes hard vignetting. CertInly  relatively thick Leica filters vignette, as do third party ‘super-slim filters, Leica got it wrong or had no intention of making either hood compatible with filters.

This described only a few posts ago here and demonstrated elsewhere by Fred Miranda.

I just emailed info@leica-camera.com (the email on their website) writing this:

“Hi,

I’m just writing in to let you know that after much consideration, I have chosen not to purchase a re-release of the brand new 35mm Summilux Steel Rim Re-Release due to a specific issue that keeps being reported by people who have purchased the lens:

It does not play nice with lens filters. It’s baffling to me (and many others in the l-camera-forums) that Leica would release a brand new lens that a) doesn’t support filters with one of the provided hoods at all, and b) causes ridiculously hard (unfixable without a LOT of work in post) vignetting when combining a lens filter with the vented hood, and that has been tested not just with Leica branded lens filters but 3rd party slim filters. Whether or not Leica believes in lens filters or not, it should be up to the owner of the product to decide whether or not a lens filter is worthwhile without a major image quality penalty. I highly suggest Leica rework the lens hoods, or some other work around, to make sure that people can continue to use lens filters however they wish.

I’m sure you’ll start seeing more of these emails, as many folks are deciding to write in. Please rework this lens hood system. The OLLUX should allow filters. The vented hood should not cause major issues with vignetting when paired with a filter. The fact that Fred Miranda (a very well respected Leica camera gear reviewer) has opted to buy a 3rd party, cheap eBay lens hood that doesn’t cause vignetting should be a sign that something needs to be done about this.
