I just watched a YT video where a guy is comparing physical color filters to digital filters on his M240. I don't remember I ever saw color filters on my M10-R, so I checked again and indeed, I can't find anything like that. Am I missing something, or Leica removed this feature in the later versions?

Here's the video:

Sorry for not replying to your question. I never had an M10-R. But on my M10 I had no such feature.

But anyway I find this video most interesting and instructing. On the other hand when converting your color images to B/W in lightroom then you have your color rulers available to adjust all your grey tones. This is most usefull.

I haven't watched the video but I generally alter the primary colors in post for B&W conversions of the DNG file.  It's easily accomplished with the sliders in LR or C1. My own preferences are Red +40, Green +40, and Blue +20.  Credit goes to Sean Reid for these settings; he's done far more critical analysis of the optimum color channels than me.

“Later versions” of what camera? What color digital M camera has ever had “color filters” programmed into the software? I am unaware any such “filters.” (The M11, perhaps?) The M8 did lack adequate filtering of IR (infrared) in the glass filter stack, over the sensor, requiring that an IR-cut filter be used on the lens, but, that is a case of physical properties of the optical glass.

Just by accedent I once used a (real) lens with a red filter that had been attached on my M-Monochrom like the one on the left) on my colour camera (a M240 like the one on the right). [No there are no in-built filters in the M240 apart from setting the temperature but that should be no news]

Yes the image was RED.

And converting it to B/W was easy. Just push a button in LR.

The outcome was very different.

The M240 image had HUGH grain. This is - I think- because the image is so much underexposed in one color range (it is skewed) that to fix it the grain is increased. This cost me a lot of acuity (appearance of sharpness). Secondly, the grey tones were not half the quality of the Monochrom. I would not propagate this solution to get a cheap monochrom output . . .

Indeed, there are built-in filters in the M240-P as is also shown in the video. Just double-checked it with my copy.

But Leica seem to have removed them from the M10 versions and from M11.

Yes, the digital color filters were implemented in the M240. I suggested it to the product managers at Leica, and I never heard anything back, but in the M240 they were there.

I must say (it was a great idea that) very few ever used it in the M240, and that is likely why it was taken out in the M10 and forward. Could be nice to have as it doesn't cost anything to have.

I think that those who want to use color filters, actually does want to use real color filters in front of the lens. It's just a great feeling.
