Due to the strong US dollar , in Australia this lens costs equivalent of USD $6300, at today's rate.   "Crikey" !

Its about the same price here in Australia if you convert English pounds to AUD

I've never been hit by customs before and I do a fair number of shoe and clothing purchases from UK stores (who all seem to ship DHL). I hadn't even considered it as a possibility but I'll update this thread either way.

Please do. I thought the customs threshold was $800 but I'd love to hear otherwise. I haven't wanted to test the waters myself.

Leica Australia are selling the new Summilux for $9290 and the older version still in stock at its normal price of $8590 so there is a $700 AUD increase for the newer lens.

Funny how we all did the same thing this morning - go to their webpage and compare prices. I did this even though I knew in advance that I will be staying with my silver chrome pre-FLE version. I wonder which behavioural bias explains such behaviour.

Presuming that the US prices of $5400 here are quoted without Tax (?) what is a typical add-on tax across the US ? (presuming that it changes state to state ) ?

Our Aussie price converted back to US or EUR seems very high but if US taxes are in the region of, say, 15% on top then it matches up

It does vary between 0-7.25%. It's common to pay tax from online purchases now even if purchased from an out of state store. However some stores still don't collect that tax so depending on which store it's purchased from it may be tax free even if one's state does have sales tax.

Varies greatly, but averages roughly 7%.  It’s 6% in mine.

How common is it for Aussies to fly to Hong Kong for that Leica or Rolex? Would the tax man know?

Yes, the Leica Australia store prices are always tax included so it works out pretty much the same.

Unfortunately it doesn't seem to, unless I am missing something in my understanding. For example, for local US purchasers:

US $5400 + approx 7% state tax (as mentioned by US posters here) = $5800 USD inc Tax .  At AUD8650 (today's rate) that's AUD550 less than our $9300 local purchase price.

Now that particular example may well be because the US dollar is strong at the moment, but the problem is the same holds true for UK market, and the pound is weak at the moment v AUD.

For UK locals Price in UK is 4950 pounds inc. Tax . At AUD8500 (today's rate) that's AUD800 less than our local purchase price.

So it seems that we are paying significantly over versus both these 2 examples.  UK VAT is around 17% and our GST 10%, so the difference is certainly not in locally applied taxes.

Not exactly complaining, just observing .... and in saying all of this we are a long way away from Portugal (I mean Wetzlar :D  )

i've found over the years that leica australia will cynically set prices at just under what you could import lenses or cameras for from the US or HK and not the equivalent, the extra 550 may allow for some of the duty or other costs

FYI UK VAT is 20% and sales tax here in NYC is 8.875%.

The pound/dollar rate is such that I would buy from the UK (exported tax free).

Silver version is listed by Red Dot at £4250 excluding VAT which is roughly $4880.
Leica USA price is $5595 + tax.

Yes, it looks like when comparing apples for apples  (i.e. local resident purchaser, inc Tax) we are priced very much over .

Let's just think of the beaches

Must be the price of aviation fuel or some such covid logistical surcharge that Australians must pay.
