How dangerous is it to update firmware on M10 ?

Hi,

I bought a very clean used M10 back in 2020. It recently occurred to me that I never updated the firmware. In fact I have never updated firmware on any digital camera I have.

It is currently running 2.7.5.0 - which looks like it was released in 2019.

The current version on the Leica Downloads page is 3.22.11.52

I read the instructions on how to update firmware (reformat card, charge battery and don't turn anything off or basically touch camera while it's updating).  I assume if I did any of those things, I'd wind up with an expensive and attractive paper weight.

1. How likely is it that updating FW will brick my camera?

2. How long does it take typically, 10 mins? 20 mins?

3. I don't notice myself wanting any new features on my M10 so I'm wondering if it's even worth updating. You don't miss what you don't have, but then again, you don't know what your missing until you have it.

Thanks

Mike

Hello Mike,

I just saw that the latest firmware is to add Visoflex 2 compatibility on M10.

If you don't plan to use one, why update.

If your plan is one then the obvious.

Myself, not planning to use Visoflex 2, I had not upgraded to latest.

The wise advice is of course updating to last firmware as some bugs can be adressed.

1 ...if you follow the notice, it's unlikely brick your M

2 ...I did former updates which took few minutes (less than five).

3 ...You are the only one to know

The only thing that’s fatal during your upgrade and probably kill your camera is when you accidentally switch off the camera, other than that, safe to say it is quite safe

just follow the guides and do it slowly, always have an almost full battery power or otherwise, either the camera won’t let you or, you just dont know what takes so long it drains the battery during the update

Crash of the camera - killing it - is usually result of mis-steps and not of new firm ware. Usually.... It is so mostly now days, not always, and it wasn't so in the past. I don't know your age, but from the picture from the profile you could be of my age or younger. And here we are: because we are not youngsters - which deal with electronic instinctually and without care, been capable to solve any arisen problem instantly - we have to go in the procedure step by step, carefully, understanding principles and from there on avoiding mistakes. I always take my time when upgrading, repeat steps 2 or 3 times imaginary and then proceed to real procedure. Until now I was always successful, with different brands and especially with Leicas. I wish you good luck!

A firmware always addresses fixes to identified problems. There is nothing wrong with keeping electronics up to date.

Just ensure that:

  • You are doing so on a fully charged battery.
  • You have downloaded and are applying the right firmware to the model of your camera.
  • You are following all instructions on the installation guide.

I think i need some help here. I could not find my question on the forum yet, so i dare to ask this.

I recently received e-mail from Leica with the announsment of Firmware update 30.22.23.34 for the M10R

The update before this update is not on my M10R. Do i have to install first the pervious firmware update and than the last update?

Hope you can help me.

No.  You do not.  You can install the most current firmware. All previous updates are in the most current version.

If the camera is working and you need nothing else then leave it alone. If you find yourself not detecting a lens or needed to use a new Visoflex or whatever and then you need to update then do it. Otherwise don’t bother and just take your pictures.

I update my firmware for pretty much all my devices quite frequently, in all the many years as a techie type person I've maybe had one thing brick on me. I seem to remember it being a motherboard back in the 90s.

Firmware updates these days are very safe, the manufacturers don't want you sending bricked items back to them and some/maybe most devices now (might just be motherboards) have a second chip that if anything goes wrong it auto-writes the old firmware back.

I would do it without hesitation, especially as your current firmware is so old. Charge the battery and follow the instructions and you'll be done within 10 minutes.
