CL w 11-23

St. Peterburg, Florida, Holocaust Museum:

So very haunting . . .

Cow Parsley. CL+TL 35mm Summilux. At f1.4 but maybe I should have opened it up just a bit more.

Louis, have you bought this lens or just trying it out? You've taken some amazing shots with it.

Hello Dippy,

Thank you very much for your kind words. Unfortunately, I had this amazing lens only for 24 hours. If I can find a used one for a good price, I will certainly consider it, and if I get it, I am sure it would stay on my camera most of the time.

The only native lens I have is the 18-56 that despite not very encouraging views, I find excellent. It is very sharp and has a beautiful color rendering.

All the best,

During most of the time I lived in Manhattan (1981-1991) my workplace supervisor was a lady who was a Holocaust survivor who had lost her father and sister under incredibly heartless circumstances.  She was a positive, energetic person who didn't often speak of her experiences.  But some of the harrowing stories she shared with me left an indelible impression on my psyche.  To this day I have never understood what motivated (and in some circles, continues to motivate) that level of hatred.

So incomprehensible.

I am taking a trip to Auschwitz this summer.  All remaining family members on my maternal great grandparents side, who still resided in Poland at the onset of WWII, perished there or in other camps in Poland.

Rob

Following up on Louis' demonstration of the different focus falloff in the CL and the M: here are the CL35@f/5.6

and the M50 (SX1.4 asph) @f/5.6

Focus was on the closest flowers, a little under 1 m away, while the trees in the background are 10-15 meters further away.  I like the CL rendering better,

Interesting that the TL keeps blue flowers to the left in focus and red flowers at top of pic much nicer than with the M lens (a surprise to me!). BTW thank you so much for allowing full size downloads of your pics.

This is how it should be when you are nice to them!... ;)

Great shot, Rob. I admire your courage of using a tripod. I have a Nikkor 300mm that is a very good lens, but I could never use it without a tripod on the tiny CL. But here is the problem; I just feel lazy to carry a tripod with me!  :(

Louis, I admit it, too:  I am too lazy to carry a tripod.  I don't own a tripod and I've used my monopod maybe twice in the last six or seven years.

One benefit of heavier lenses is inertia, which dampens potential fine shake or tremors, and enables slower shutter speeds than one might imagine on static objects.
