SirBlunder Posted July 23, 2022 Share #1 Posted July 23, 2022 Advertisement (gone after registration) I came from the Sony Alpha system. EVERY new Sony product I bought/owned was perfect right out of the box. (Not saying they all are -- just my experience.) I sold everything in favor of a Q2 about a month ago. While I do love using the camera and the images it produces... this has been my experience thus far: 1) The first one I got arrived with the touch function completely non-operational. Had to send it back to Adorama, wait for them to receive the broken one before they'd send me a new unit (given the high dollar amount of the transaction). I ended up paying for the second one, waiting (anxiously) for Adorama to receive the old one and process my refund, given a travel schedule that was set in stone. 2) Received the new one, which I'm still (mostly happily) using. It arrived with: A very small amount of dust in the viewfinder. How'd it get there? I know others have had this issue. *HOW* is this possible with a $5,700 camera? It doesn't affect images (obviously) and isn't visible when using the EVF but... call me crazy or picky... the camera should be PERFECT. Any way to get it out? Or stop more from getting in? The zone focusing lines are not accurate. Are they just for show? E.g. I set aperture to f/8, slide the manual focus ring such that f/8 is perfectly matched up with the ∞ symbol, and then go to focus on something way out in the distance and it's... visibly not in focus. Always needs a slight adjustment. Anybody else? I don't do much "zone focusing" but, given that my lines appear to be, well, wrong... I won't even bother trying it. Frustrating. My manual focus ring isn't 100% tight. It has a very tiny though noticeable amount (maybe 1/2 of a mm) of "give" when you go to rotate it. You can jiggle it back and forth when the ring is "locked" into AF mode. Anybody else? Anyway, like I said, I do love the camera (the design, ease of use, size, the photos it produces, etc.), and realize that my issues are kind of... superficial. That said, safe to say, I'm not thrilled to be a new Leica user after my first month or so, and definitely feel a bit... let down. Was expecting the transition to be *perfect* given the reputation (and $$$) and it's been considerably less than that. Curious to know your thoughts given all of you have more experience than I do with the Leica ecosystem.

Nope, I don't own a Q2 at the moment.

Those lens markings (on all lenses, AFAIK) are traditionally based on pre-WWII film cameras. To be used with digital, you need to reduce the markings by one to two stops, depending on what CoC you are satisfied with. Remember that only one distance is in focus. Everything closer and further from the focus point has a varying amount of focus blur. 1
SrMi Posted July 23, 2022 Share #6 Posted July 23, 2022 I have bought one Q and three Q2s, all from my local dealer. None of them had any issues.
Viv Posted July 23, 2022 Share #7 Posted July 23, 2022 Advertisement (gone after registration) I don't believe that these defects are normal. My Q2 has none of them.

Well, it might be a demo unit or used item. Nope, I don't own a Q2 at the moment. Well, my brand new Q2 also had dust inside the EVF right out of the box. A big chunk and a smaller one. The dealer I got it from didn't have a replacement available, so I had to send it to Germany to have it cleaned. Not the end of the world, but disappointing for what is supposed to be a premium product. It took 3-4 weeks to get the camera back. According to the dealer, the dust issue may happen during transport. The dust is hidden somewhere, not visible in the EVF, but during transportation, with movements and bumps, it may get dislocated and appear on the display. Welcome, dear visitor! Mine is actually the same in AF (locked) position. I never noticed that. Probably that point is fine. The dust problem should not be.

LeicaR10 Posted July 23, 2022 Share #12 Posted July 23, 2022 SirBlunder, Based on your OP initial thread and my 40+ years with using Leica products, I highly suspect your replacement Q2 is not new. It could well be an "Open Box", a camera that was either opened in store or returned and found the returned item not "flawed" by staff assessment and returned to stock. It does happen. Personally, I would have called the store, gotten a return authorization number and shipped it all back for a full refund. Then go to a Leica Store or boutique and buy it in store. If not possible, then simply go to the Leica Online website and buy it online. If you have that opportunity to return it, I suggest you do so. The Q2 should be flawless out of the box. Even the Leica Stores would immediately replace a defective product. Unfortunately, you had a poor experience and hopefully you can get this resolved to your liking with the store or with Leica. Just my opinion and experience. r/ Mark

Should be; just got the camera 3 or so weeks ago, though I’ve been traveling with it and using it.
double00 Posted July 23, 2022 Share #14 Posted July 23, 2022 I would have sent the second camera back as well. For that amount of money, the camera should be in perfect condition.
Herr Barnack Posted July 23, 2022 Share #15 Posted July 23, 2022 (edited) I bought my Q2 from Camera West. It was new in the box with no defects. Mint condition is the way any new Leica should be. It is not "reasonable" for a NIB camera that costs nearly $6000 USD to arrive with "just one or two" of defects. If a person is okay with a Q2 with"just one or two" of defects, they buy from the used market and get a discount of $1000-2000 off the new camera price. Ba Erv Posted July 23, 2022 Share #16 Posted July 23, 2022 The outer box should’ve been sealed…pretty easy to tell if it had been opened.

For the first defective one.. and the second. Thing is.. I’m still traveling. Still using the camera all day. It’s definitely still “mint”, but I wonder if they’ll question my returning it a few weeks later. I’ve also installed a screen protector on it. Hmm…
earleygallery Posted July 23, 2022 Share #18 Posted July 23, 2022 Sealed box so most likely 'factory fresh'. The fault is dust in the view finder which I'm sure you could have dealt with under the warranty, when you return and can spare some time without the camera. I don't doubt I can get it "dealt with" under warranty. That's not really my issue. The issue is that.. I ordered one that had to be sent back, had to expedite the second one so that I had the camera for my summer trip, and now this second one is also (somewhat) defective, I'm in a situation where I can either (1) try to return this slightly used one back to Adorama for another replacement, or (2) I can keep using this one (I'm here for another week, why wouldn't I?) and then, at some point when I think I might not need my $6,000 camera for a weeks (or longer) I can deal with making a warranty claim and sending the camera away. Both are VERY BAD options for a camera of this caliber, I think. I should also point out that I live in Miami (down the street from the Leica store here). I absolutely should have gotten the camera from them, but did not, because they were out of stock and, as mentioned, I was up against time pressure for me one summer trip. That said, I'm thinking I'll go over there with the camera once I'm back in town to see what they recommend.
