Please report to Leica, thank you!

Today I wrote to Leica to report the M11 profile's poor behaviour with yellows colours that are near clipping with Adobe LR or ACR. They told me it was adobe problem because the DNG file I sent them looked ok in Capture One.

I have no issues with Adobe profiles. Only with M11.

It's not always easy to get through to Leica.

This JPG engine is probably "operating as intended" but I'll give them a mail about it...

Yes, sometimes it takes more effort to communicate the real problem, but that may be the only way to fix things. It may also help if more people report the same issue.

Allego qui un file JPG senza alcuna elaborazione. Ho impostato tutti i valori su -2 (nitidezza, contrasto) e la riduzione del rumore su -1. Ti sembra normale? Sto sbagliando qualcosa o i JPG M11 fanno schifo? Sembrano usciti da un cartone animato! Dammi la tua opinione per favore...

these files lack contrast which would make sense since you have a -2 contrast setting.

- 2 contrast is good if you plan to do a little post processing because it retains more of the  captured data.

Leave sharpness and noise reduction at default 0. Only set contrast to -2. B&W High Contrast film style works best with the -2 Contrast. If you use a very old, low contrast lens, you may want to shoot the B&W High Contrast setting at its defaults and not reduce contrast.

Thank you hdmesa, I used the Voigtlander 28mm f2 Ultron I for this shot. I will do as you say. I've never had this much trouble with JPGs with any Leica M series!!! 😭

Using a Leica lens like the Summicron 28/2 could help perhaps as the Ultron 28/2 is somewhat more contrasty. Now i'm not sure if you're after less or more contrast as my Italian is bad sorry.

I cannot understand all this excitement. JPG files are rather irrelevant anyway. If you want really good ones, use an iPhone. Those JPGs are unbeatable.

Thanks but I don't seem to have asked for the Moon and your answer doesn't seem very intelligent. I use JPGs on camera very often because they are lighter and I don't have to process them to send them quickly. If I have to buy an iPhone for JPGs, maybe I'll sell the M11. Thanks again for the help 😉

No Ict, I'm looking for something more natural, less artificial and fake. That's all. With the M9, M240, M10, JPGs have never given me these problems!

This is too subjective for me to help you sorry.

I do not shoot JPG and have no experience with OP's issue.
Can anyone post comparisons with JPGs from M11 and other digital Ms that show the alleged "digital" and "plastic" characteristics?
P.S.: I am not saying that OP is wrong or that he must prove his characterization of M11's JPG. The comparison would be solely for my education.

I would but....... I've never experienced anything remotely similar to those descriptions.  My JPEGs are marvelous.

I concur, JPG and unmodified conversions are quite unremarkable. But from the raws, one can get whatever desires, it took me a while but I am now super happy with the system. and I am very picky. if of any help here are my capture one profiles, feel free to play with these if you like them. colour has a blue cast and bw rich of contrast. subjective.

Have you tried the FREE 30-day trial of Capture One to see if what Leica says is true and maybe it is a problem with Adobe’s jpg processing? Adobe had a lot of problems in the early days of Fujifilm’s X cameras. They eventually got it right, but not for quite a while, whereas Capture One sorted it pretty quickly.  Don’t forget the M11 has a new sensor.

It's Adobe ACR that renders the file like this since the instruction set for the embedded colour profile is embedded in the DNG file. It's not the camera, nor the Adobe program that is at fault. Leica have created a brutally simple (perhaps insufficient) DCP colour profile that lacks even basic forward matrixes. The Adobe Standard profile is a long and complex profile by comparison, and Capture One will also likely apply its version of a colour profile for its conversion.

I've been shooting only in JPG and I haven't liked the files at all. Perhaps this is a topic that has already been covered on the forum

Yes it has. I was reading one about black and white being pretty bad too. It ended in a big fight 😅

Dear Thomas, I have not insulted anyone. If I say that the jpegs of the M11 do not satisfy me, but that I use them for my work and that I paid 8900 euros for the M11, I was simply trying to understand why this happens in a professional and expensive machine. For you an appropriate answer "I can't understand all this fuss. JPG files are pretty irrelevant anyway. If you want really good ones, use an iPhone. Those JPGs are unbeatable' (??) To get satisfactory Jpegs, I have to buy an iPhone? Does that sound like an adequate answer? For the work I do, Jpegs are very useful and not irrelevant. Does it seem to you that I have insulted anyone? Instead, it seems to me that you often give answers to questions that serve no purpose. And then there are too many people who are easily offended. Next time re-read both the question and the answer carefully, best regards.
