With the 007, we could pick up a mint used one in 2019 for around 5-6K and can still do it now.  So it fell to $5K range in 4-5 years after launch.

When can we expect to see the same prices for used S3?

The announcement was in 2018 with a much delayed launch in 2020.  I don't see used prices below 14-15K.  That was also the trade-in price for 007 upgrade (and you didn't have to give up the 007).  That didn't make sense to me and still doesn't.  I like the 007.

I wonder if we'll ever see low prices on used S3, as there seems to be no sales.  Perhaps they make them just in time...  I've seen someone here say that prices are dropping step by step, but I've not seen it.  What do y'all think?  A used S3 for $5K in 2024?  Ever?

I dont expect it to come drastically down before there is either a S4 announced, or a new S mirrorless medium format.

Right now there is a used one on ebay, but it is more the price level you mention.

If Leica would announce/ supply a new S body, S3 prices would probably go down. But maybe not, if it is a new system, maybe ownders of the "old" S-lenses would like to get a S3 because it might be the last S with optical viewfinder. (All is pure speculation from my side, I dont know anything about a future S body)

I'd just get my bodyguard to cover it up with his thumb. 👍

Setuporg,   S photographers wanting an S3 can ask their Leica dealer for a Leica S3 "Q".  These run about $13K.  Essentially Leica does a refurb on demo Leica cameras and lenses and sells them at a lower price as they are not new.  But, I can say based on experience with "Q" S006 and S007s, the cameras are essentially new.  I don't think based on past history Leica will lower the price until the S4 arrives on scene.  Leica is committed to the S system as they recently appointed a new S program manager.  I expect a new S in about 2 years.  In the meantime, a Leica S3 "Q" or someone who is looking to sell their S3 might be the only route.  Personally, I don't do eBay for Leica gear anymore and only deal direct with a Leica dealer.  r/ Mark

The S3 is produced in very (very) low numbers, so the situation isn't quite comparable to the 006/007. They won't come up often at all 2nd hand in the future. You should be ready when the opportunity presents itself.

I have picked up my S3 in Wetzlar in March 2021 but up to now I don`t know or meet anybody with a S3 in Germany. Sometimes I think I am the only one here.

By the way, the S3 is my big and heavy boy. Their pictures are great without any discussion. But in the meantime mostly I am on the run with my M 10-R plus APO-Summicron 35 mm plus Visoflex. It`s a very handy combo to travel around and the (close up) pictures !!!!!

Regards Hans

I actually decided to trade in the SL2 and a few lenses and picked up a used S3, primarily to keep the S007 as well.  I work mostly out on the coast, and only once did I change lenses out there.  Too much sand!  This will let me shoot 2 focal lengths.  For slow deliberate shooting, nothing beats the S system at this point, except maybe the IQ backs, but those make S system cameras look cheap.  I know some using the S3, and while it isn't a lot, it is about the same number of people I know using the S007.   Ditto on the 'Q' items if you can get them.  My S007 was a Q and I got it in 2018.  I've used that camera in the pouring rain in Iceland, and 35 mph winds after a hurricane with no ill effects, ever.

Honestly, I would love to see an S-film body that used the same shutter system but allowed film to run through the back.  I really enjoy using the R8 and R9 with various R lenses and they are so similar in size / weight.

Just a thought, sure it will never happen!
