Survey: Would you buy an EVF only camera with an M mount?

  1. 1. Should Leica make a manual focus EVF camera?

    • Absolutely. I'm second in line after Flash.
    • Never! It's the work of the Devil.
    • Hmmm? Not sure. I'd want to see it first.
    • I want one of each. M11 and this new wonder camera!
    • Not for me but I'd be happy if it exists.
    • Does it come in Monochrom?

I'm not going to wade through 42 pages to see if this point has been made ..... but don't you think that the selection of naff bolt on visoflex EVF's for the M range indicates how Leica feel about this ?

They could have ditched the opto-mechanical viewfinder years ago ..... the whole mechanism is a real pain when it comes to adjustment and calibrations so it would have simplified construction and reduced costs. A pure EVF version is not difficult to implement.

I await the day that the EVF-M is available and the thread complaining about how the viewfinder view isn't as good as it could be, etc., etc.. (And yes, add on visoflexes always look like an afterthought to me).

Time to go to a mirrorless M mount camera instead of trying to make the M into something that it isn’t.

To be a little pedantic: We already have a mirrorless M. All of them are, actually. 😉

[...] I hope Leica makes a mirrorless camera with an M mount. I really do. Especially since a lot of people just can’t focus a rangefinder for various reasons. Or could before and no longer can. It’s also more accessible to more people and they can sell even more M lenses. Everyone wins.
I win because well…

Yes, it is. 😝 If I were to buy an EVF M it had to look like an M, that's the whole point (I know the MD-2 is also an M, but not the most typical one). The viewfinder window has become an important part of the iconic design. So Leica has to include it even though it is not needed, either just for decoration or with another function (something à la the M10-D's thumb rest).

The MD-2 was not typical for sure but the EVF-M is not supposed to be typical either. Now factice things are not my cup of tea unless they are easy to remove like the red dot of my early M4-2 used to be. YMMV.

According to the wiki here ~2600 were made. Add all the scientific Ms (including the M1) and that equates to about 32k cameras out of what 6-700 k M cameras all told (very -ish) so no not typical and low sales.

Yep. And due to their 'aging' eyes they still can't focus properly (which means in the end they should've just gotten an AF camera and lenses with a 'P' mode).

Good point. Focusing on an EVF is not as easy as a rangefinder. Aging eyes can normally be optimized and if not cannot use an EVF either

That is basically correct. But a general “EVF is better for aging eyes” which can be found multiple times in this thread, is even more misleading by the same token and deserves a pushback.

EVFs weren't so good 10 years ago, so it's probably for the best that they waited.

BTW, what's the oldest thread or post about the EVF-M? Is it here on this forum?

A possible future EVF M is mentioned in this thread from 2009 (post #7). I don't know if this is the very first time though:

Tisk tisk, more misinformation. People have different eye problems and find different viewfinders easier to focus.

You will still be using manual focus lenses with an M EVF. And you're no longer looking straight 'through glass' (except the patch) but instead at a mini TV only millimeters from your eye. I think (and know for me), like Jaap says, an EVF solving eye issues isn't automatic.
