Dear Jono, your great review (as usual) has been a big disappointment for me!…. I was hoping, crossing fingers and expecting the same superb review for a new CL!

I hope Leica is not ending the APS-C system in their lineup as it has been rumored, and I would have the joy of reading your review very soon! If you have any news about this issue that you can share with us, please do it!😅

All the best, dear friend.

Thank you for the review! I see where the tears part of the process came in when you dropped it. My heart stopped just thinking about it.

If the finish is like the Q2R or M10 Reporter, then it must be like them in texture only. Neither of those cameras show any wear with the strap. In fact, on my Q2R, I thought the finish had worn off to black where the straps rubs against the body – but it turns out it was the finish that was wearing the black off the strap! Wiped right off. Makes me smile every time I see the black there now. So I have to think they went with a similar painting technique, texture, and application process, but it doesn't sound like it is a scratch-resistant finish like the Reporters.

Less vignetting confirmed with BSI is nice, although I wonder if they also increased the amount of shading correction over the M10. I hope its all the BSI at work there. In either case, it will make shooting lenses like the 28 Lux wide open so much easier, since the meter had to deal with the nearly dark corners and the bright central hot spot. When this BSI sensor is moved over to the monochrome, I think this will be an even bigger benefit since the shading issue would cause me to be constantly and accidentally overexposing with the 28 Lux wide open.

Your findings on the shutter lag relieve a lot of concerns may of us had in the other M11 thread concerning the shutter being open for metering. I'm so glad the lag is not as bad as the M10. Is the "clunk" sound the same, though? Or has that been dampened somewhat?

Thank you for your great review, as usual. You have answered (almost*) all my questions, and I thoroughly enjoy your photographs.

For me, reviewers are useful only as far as you can trust their comments, based on previous reviews and personal experience. I find your reviews utterly trustworthy.

*One question - what does the shutter sound like, both in rangefinder and liveview mode? How does it compare to the M10R?

Thanks for your typically fine and practical insights, Jono. Thanks, too, for reproducing Roger’s Appendix, which I’ve linked here about a dozen times over the last year. I trust that far more people will actually read and trust the information presented by you, hopefully dispelling somewhat the ubiquitous camera/lens MP myth. Now if Roger would only write about high resolution motion blur.

Its's interesting. Alternately, I'm wondering if this was achieved though even less glass to the sensor site with BSI and/or improved microlensing.

Thank you for the wide-covering review! However no mention is made of the regular viewfinder, has there been any changes/improvements or is it identical to the M10?

Regards

Arne

Hi There Arne

I'm not aware of any improvements - but mine is lovely!

BSI technology doesn't have the narrow wells that FSI has, which would block light coming in from too much of an angle. In theory. It's just with other brand's BSI sensors, I've never seen a single person demonstrate reduced vignetting. So the fact that the M11 actually does may mean Leica did some extra work in this department – or perhaps M lenses uniquely benefit from the more shallow wells of BSI.

Hi There

Well, the paint finish is almost unmarked above the strap lugs (just faint shinyness). It's been through a 3 week hiking holiday in Crete with dust and sweat (a potent mixture!). I always carry the camera in my hand or over my shoulder (not in a bag). So I'm pretty sure it is a scratch-resistant finish like the reporters.

I think it's the BSI - otherwise there would have been work to be done on the shading correction (which there wasn't)

I think the shutter sounds pretty good now (not so different from my M10-R although a bit more complicated). You do get used to it quickly and it's certainly much quieter than an M10.

best

In one of the M11 videos from Leica released today (the one where they sit down for coffee), they mentioned the viewfinder is generally the same, though some very small improvements were made. They didn't say what was improved, so that tells you it was not something that would impact us in a significant way – or they will mention it later in passing in some other format.

I like that the black finish is wearing to a different sheen, though. I think that will look nice. Perhaps my Q2R will do the same with more use. The texture of the Q2R is incredible for grip, so I think that many will be happy with that aspect of the black M11. Thank you!

Very interesting review. The lack of a stabilised sensor is not mentioned in it.  Presumably that it because you do not think it is an issue worth raising as I assume you had no trouble in using the 60mp sensor without any trace of camera shake. I don't think I would be able to that, so it is a concern to me. I assume Leica left it out because there was no room.  Surely it would be an upgrade if they could have fitted it.  Otherwise why is it fitted to the Sl etc? I wonder what you think?

Maybe it will come actually calibrated out of the box - unlike my brand new M10-R BP that then had to go back to leica for a month. 🤣
