50mm takes the lead indeed by a large margin.  Here is the updated list :

  1. 50mm (147)
  2. 35mm (85)
  3. 90mm (58)
  4. 28mm (54)
  5. 21mm (36)

Average 9,1 lenses per member.

(update) Also interesting :

  • Of all members indicating they have a 50mm lens 60% have more than one.
  • For the 35mm only 32% of members having this focal length do have multiple 35's.  The same 32% applies for the 90mm.

Couldn't the reason simply be that there are more 50mm lenses to choose from?

If the average ownership is 9.1 focal lengths, I can now try to convince my wife that my outfit is not only reasonable but more or less boringly so.

All Leica 'latest' and APO from 35mm onwards:

18, 21, 24, 28, 35, 50, 75, 90 and 135  (one of each FL)

(35 and 28 are the most used)

50mm was considered the standard focal length in the past and 50mm lenses have always been less expensive than other focal lengths of the same aperture at Leica. My favorite explanation is that my mother in law (peace to her soul) found she had a big nose when i was stupid enough to shoot her with a 35mm lens but it is a debatable matter :D.

And once and for all to answer the question "what 3 focal length combo should I buy?" ....

...according to the data in this post from people with 3 or more different focal length lenses 52% have at least one 28mm, a 50mm and a 90mm.  That is the highest score for all 3 focal length combinations.  44% goes to the other classic 35-50-75 combo.

Disclaimer : don't take this too seriously since this data comes from people with an average of more than 9 lenses (not 3).  Statistics have some fun factor too and are there to help explaining every "truth".

I no longer have any M lenses.

Most of those I had were Zeiss.

I disposed of them when I dumped the awful Leica M9, with its terribly inconsistent white balance.

I will NEVER buy another Leica rangefinder camera. If, however, Zeiss were to produce a digital version of the Ikon rangefinder camera, I would be first in line to buy it.

If you see that in a few years time the Summilux75 went from 2500 to 3500€, an M4 from 600 to 1100€, it’s quite useless to keep your money at the bank.

Sometimes when I'm out photographing with my M10 Monochrom and a lens or two, I get this odd feeling - like I'm walking around with a bag of diamonds around my neck.

Anyone else?

Being a Leica user, collector and dealer for the past 50 years, I have had virtually every focal length at some point in time. The only focal lengths I never had were the 15 R, the Hologon and the 800 Telyt. Being a dealer made it easier to collect, of course.

Some were sold off either because I needed the money, or to fund other acquisitions. For some reason, I still have my 125 Hektor and six Xenons. You can always justify what you have to yourself, but of course others will see you as rather “odd”.

And of course with prices of Leica lenses spiraling ever upward, I wish I had kept my 35 Lux Steel Rim, my Noctilux, etc to sell in todays market and not years ago!

Nope. I feel like I'm walking around with an ancient, unrecognisable anachronism which not even a mugger would consider to be remotely desirable. Suits me to a 'T'...
