Highlight clipping with M lenses?

Any way to get highlight clipping with M lenses? When I change from TL lenses to M glass with the adapter the clipping vanishes.

Ok, I guess I’m not hearing well. I remain confused why the clipping exposure aid won’t function with manual lenses on the CL.

I suppose you’re right but I generally eschew using the histogram because it consumes too much of the EVF for me. I’ve gotten used to using the clipping aid on my SL2-S and was looking for continuity with the CL; apparently, that’s not going to happen. Thanks anyway.

The displayed aids are on a loop. Just toggle through when you need one. Some people like to have an uncluttered screen when framing a picture. I do.

I can get clipping to work fine as long as I use an autofocus lens.  As soon as I change to a manual focus M with the Leica adapter it’s gone.  All the other aids (histogram, level, peaking) are there except clipping.  I’m new to the CL so if I’m doing something wrong I’d love to know what it is.

Just spoke with David Farkas @Leica Store Miami and he duplicated the issue; its not just me.  He’s passing the bug on to Leica. Maybe they’ll fix it in a firmware update.

First time i use it but indeed the clipping tool doesn't work with M lenses. Thanks for warning.

Why do you think that histograms are more precise?

I always prefer blinkies as it tells me which highlights are blown. But the best part is that they do not obstruct the view like the histogram window and appear on demand (half-press). An unobstructed view through the EVF is critical to me.

My testing:

I fitted the 1972 Summilux 35mm to my CL and set it to ISO 800. I framed a scene in modest, normal room light that included a light fixture turned on in the frame, set the camera to Aperture priority, and set the aperture to f/16 after setting the focus. As I opened up the aperture, the highlight clipping indicated the room light would be clipped, as expected. I did the same with a Summicron-M 50mm, a Color Skopar 28mm, and an M-Rokkor 90mm. So the clipping tool does work. It might not work as well as it does with a native lens due to the lack of maximum aperture and set aperture information ... these are not sent to the body when an adapted lens is fitted. I don't have any native L mount lenses to test with. 

That said, I find the histogram is much more useful than a clipping indicator. If it takes up too much real estate on the screen, just press the center button of the four way controller after you've locked in your exposure setting to eliminate it.

What version of firmware are you using?  I'm on 4.1 and tried four different M lenses and two different adapters in a dozen varying light conditions without success.  As soon as I put a TL lens on the clipping works perfectly.  When I talked to David he got the same results.  Seems odd you got it to work.

When i said it doesn't work i meant it didn't blink as it does with AF lenses. But yes it doesn't work as intended. I was in auto iso manual mode though, no idea if it is related.

The latest. And exclusively the M Adapter L mount adapter. I did nothing special, just pointed the camera at a scene in my office. It works, I have no explanation or conjecture as to why the same thing wouldn't work on your camera.

Can you confirm that you see highlights clipping in live view, not only in image review?

I cannot see highlight clipping on my CL in live view when using Leica's M/L adapter.

Yes, the display is showing highlight clipping in Live View. I didn't even bother making the exposure, just tested the clipping indication function on the LCD/EVF.

For completeness, I'll say that I'd have to make the exposure and evaluate it in a raw converter to determine if the clipping indication is actually happening at a sensible exposure point. Which I suppose wouldn't be that difficult to do, but the histogram is so much more useful I don't see why it matters.

Yep.  So, lose one aid to gain another.

I mapped peaking to the right wheel button as about the fastest way to switch between the two.
