I love the look of the pre-brassed version. From the samples I’ve seen it can’t match the optics of the Leica, but for a couple of hundred bucks I think it makes a nice fun lens.

The Summaron isn't perfect.  The centre is stunning, the corners not, but you don't look at the corners.  If you stop it down you lose the unique look (IMHO).  I'm waiting for my black version TTartisan, I hope it approaches the Summaron, I really miss it!

Flare stress test pics with the TTA.  M7 w/ C200.  No lens hood, no filter.

I think this is a better buy for what it is than the Summaron. For what one would use it and how you’d use it, it’ll get the job done.

I thought about it too but my 28f2 Ultron II is so tiny and awesome I sort of got over it pretty quick.

Yeah, if I was logical about my lens choices I only 'need' one 28mm, not the three that I have.

Yes, logic says so.  Head and heart choices...  I do have the Matte Edition 28mm Summicron so it's not like I need another 28mm really.  More to make the camera tiny, but I have some great pics from when I had the Summaron so I hope the TTArtisan is good too.  At some point I want to try the Avenon/Kobalux 28mm, and the GR 28mm.

When did logic ever come into it? 🙂

Exactly!  And that is why I bought this lens - because in black I just love how it looks.  Bonus now is that I am loving how it performs!

Still waiting for my black lens but I too love the performance. Have you tried the  Hektor 28mm f6.3, an interesting lens.

Unfortunately, from what I’m seeing in this thread, it doesn’t. I’m not commenting on the performance or quality of the lens, not having one I wouldn’t know. But the rendering I’m seeing here is quite different to the Summaron. Which is of course only to be expected due to a different optical design.

I had the opportunity to play with a sample at my local camera show. I really like its tiny size and form factor.  The aperture is a little fiddly but it would be a lens I wouldn't fiddle with too much.

After a few months I noticed the black paint version was getting sold, so I finally bought one. It helped to have a $50 Amazon gift card I had no clue what to use on! It'll be a great lens to throw into a tiny pocket on my sling, just in case I need something wider to walk around with. Currently mine is moving about China, hopefully it gets here before it gets dark and cold again!

There is a very comprehensive illustrated article comparing these two lenses in the latest LHSA journal by a Marke Gilbert. I can't find it published elsewhere. Basic conclusion is excellent value of TT lens for 10% of Leica cost, but as Ian suggests the rendering is different and the Leica lens has more character. FWIW.

No such luck.  I'd like to, but the closest I had was the Orion 15.

It would be great if someone could post side by side shots of the same subject/taken at the same time with the Summaron and the TTA.  So we can see the differences - which there will be because they do not share the same optical formula.

Exactly what Marke does in his article across a range of subjects and apertures and looks at the standard centre, corner and edge trio. Not sure how you can access without joining LHSA I am afraid.

Here we have 1. Summaron 2.8cm f5.6 (screw mount). 2. Hektor 2.8cm f6.3. and 3. TTA 28mm f5.6. Straight out of camera with no PP.
