Annoying as it may seem, it’s just basic supply and demand. I don’t see anything wrong if somebody wants to pay over MSRP for an item in short supply. Doesn’t seem like Schouten is an authorized Leica dealer, so they can do whatever they want regarding pricing. It’s a free market…

Exactly. People often seem to forget this. As long as he is the rightful owner of that thing, he is entitled to ask whatever price he wants. You can take it or leave it. It's that simple.
There's nothing wrong with that, neither legally nor morally.

That being said, I find even the official price preposterous, let alone this one.

We who are Leica disciples are just fools in love.  🙄

Sure we are. And there's nothing wrong with that.
But in this particular case it seems to me you're paying a premium not necessarily for better image quality, but just for a shorter minimum focusing distance - a focusing distance which is unusable with the rangefinder anyway. Personally, while I'm willing to pay four or five thousand euros for a lens that gives me some exquisite image quality (I did, actually), I won't pay two thousand euros extra just for a gimmick. Let alone four thousand extra.

Was this an eBay listing?  I was looking at a 35mm Summilux V2 in his eBay shop a month ago and remembered seeing it on his website too, so I checked back there to make sure it was indeed the same lens.  It was, and was listed much cheaper.   Needless to say I bought it from the website.  His eBay prices must be speculative.

His prices on eBay are normally much higher than those on his website, presumably simply in order to offset all of eBay’s fees.

I have my doubts that it costs an extra $2358.85 USD to sell that lens on ebay...

I just looked up eBay’s fees:

https://pages.ebay.com/gd/en-us/seller-center/seller-updates/2021-spring/fees-update.html#m17-1-tb2

12.55% on total amount of the sale up to $7,500 calculated per item

2.35% on the portion of the sale over $7,500

The price on his website is 9,000 Euros.  That on his ebay store is about 10,000 Euros.  Does it not work out?

I hadn't thought of that, in the case of my Summilux it's just about exactly right.   So the thing to do is check the seller's store for a better deal....

Wow, I did not realize the heavy premium that eBay charges.  Definitely an eBay turn-off for me.

Looking more carefully on the website, and assuming that Schouten is not a “starter store” on eBay, his fees are probably closer to 9% than 12.55%, but yeah, still some charges. What a business!

His website prices are often ex-VAT. eBay prices will have to include any VAT.

Right. Plus, if a client of a photographer wants him to deliver images or film solely  made with that lens and wants to pay a bit extra for the assignment, I don’t see that as very uncommon.

Or he is just passing on eBay fees?

Yeah, it does appear to be the case.  I'd forgotten how much the fees add up to. Although as a business seller I'd assume his fees would be a bit less than a private seller.
