BjarniM Posted March 15, 2021 Share #1 Posted March 15, 2021 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm ordering a factory new M-A this week, and I would like to add a personalized engraving on it since I will keep it for life. Can you please show me a photograph of your personalized engraving on your Leica? This can also be digital Leica's, and not 'only' film cameras where this thread is located. Thanks in advance. I think that's the first time I've seen a camera with that kind of acanthus scroll engraving. It is obviously common in the sporting gun world – a Purdey or Holland & Holland would look slightly odd without it – but it also seems to work quite nicely on a Leica. johntobias Posted March 25, 2021 Share #13 Posted March 25, 2021 Personally think that’s hideous. Ok for a Purdey or baretta shotgun but def not a camera. But each to their own 2
pgk Posted March 28, 2021 Share #14 Posted March 28, 2021 Keeping things in the 'photographic family' I think that any engraving should be carried out using something similar to this: http://www.lathes.co.uk/taylor-hobson-engravers/page6.html
NickOC Posted December 20, 2022 Share #15 Posted December 20, 2022 (edited) I am sorry I am very late to this thread but… does anyone know why Leica do not do engraving on Q2s but they offer the engraving service for other cameras? Is it because the metal or finish is different in some way? I would like to have my Q2 engraved on the top with the Leica logo. Does anyone have any recommendations? I understand engraving is not to everyone’s taste and I could just leave it alone. I want a professional engraving that looks like it came with the camera. Many thanks for any help. jaapv Posted December 20, 2022 Share #16 Posted December 20, 2022 You'd have to ask Leica - but my guess is that they think that the coating might chip.
NickOC Posted December 20, 2022 Share #17 Posted December 20, 2022 Thank you and a good point! I will ask Leica as you suggest and update the post with their answer.

Because at the monthly M-A meet up none of you could put your camera down, as you may pick up someone else's and only find out when you develop the film.

Quite amazing. I love when people makes stuff their own - without regard to future resale- and collector value. I am just curious about how it ages. Engraving through the chrome exposes the zink alloy below, which is known to be the enemy of oxygen. Many M6s have the "pitting problem" which is commonly attributed to oxygen finding its way through the chrome finish to the zink alloy below and then causing the alloy to oxidise making those ungainly pimples on some cameras - not pretty if you have seen them. If that theory holds, this camera should probably evolve into a blooming zink disaster - unless they have sealed the engravings somehow?
