R-lenses on SL2-S: auto ISO stuck

Auto ISO mode. Works fine with SL lenses. But with an R lens and the Leica adapter it doesn’t adjust.

Also, the SL used to switch to focus zoom when I touched the focus ring on an S lens but no longer does so on the SL2-S. What’s up? Is my memory failing me?

In some modes the auto Iso stays at 100, I have noticed too with adapted lenses with M adapter.

Focus Magnification only works on Leica original adapters, and electronic contacts or 6bit coding.. in the Focusing menu you can turn it on and off.

If you center click the joystick with manual lenses a magnified view is engaged .

Yes, stays at 100. Seems odd that it is lens-related?

I have Leica adapters, but neither the M nor R lenses do the auto zoom when I manually adjust the focus. I did check the Focus option and “Auto magnification” is “On” but this seems to work with SL lenses only. Again, not SL601 behavior.

So basically to trigger focus Magnification you need to center click on a joystick ? There is not an option to turn Auto Focus Magnification on with manual lenses ?

Exactly. Even with a ROM’d R lens, Leica R-SL adapter, “Auto magnification” switched on, I have to press the joystick to get the EVF zoomed in. I just noticed something else. It didn’t auto-detect the R-lens. I wonder if that has something to do with it?  I’ll have to test this all side by side with the SL601.

I believe the auto-zoom with manual lenses doesn't work because there is no electronic or physical coupling that tells the camera when the focus ring is turned. It works with native lenses because of the fly-by-wire focus system. It works on an M camera because of the physical rangefinder coupling.

I had proposed back when the SL was introduced that Leica could easily determine when to auto-zoom with focus change by registering the contrast change in the image, much like peaking works today. This method could be fooled though by camera or subject movement so I would not want this option. I don't use the auto-zoom function with native lenses either so I'm biased.

The auto ISO is also stuck at 100 with R lenses, leica adapter on the SL2 unless I’m missing something.

Changing focal length of an R zoom lens would also be a potential problem with automatic detection of changes in the image.

This is very interesting. I have the original SL and Auto ISO works fine with my all my R lenses. Of course, there is not Auto Magnification with R lenses.

Auto ISO works fine in my original SL as well with the R-Adapter L. However, there used to be a firmware bug in the camera which prevented correct identifcation of the focal length through the R-Adapter L when ROM lenses were used. Putting an L lens on the camera and then putting the R adapter back fixed the the situation. This was fixed in the next release of the camera firmware. Maybe there is some firmware glitch in SL2-S. I have never used one.

Anyone figured it out? I recently got M42 lens with dumb adapter and I got auto iso stuck at 100, despite lens profile is selected etc?

A separate bug to note - the r to l adapter doesn’t work with non rom lenses.  There is a short in the connector which messes up the focal length being transmitted to the lens.  I use dumb adapter for all non rom lenses, which solves the issue.

To be clear, the R-Adapter L is compatible with a 3rd-cam R lenses, meaning those that were made after the R3 was released. For older 2-cam or 1-cam Leicaflex lenses you need a different adapter like the Novoflex one.

It the same compatibility as with an R8 or R9 camera.

Nope…. There’s a huge issue with flange distance in 3 cam lenses that tends to make short with the r adapter l.

I tested the R-L Adapter with 3 Cam lens attached (I tried three different 3 Cam lenses) 

My camera is running firmware 6.0.0 and the R-L Adapter is ver 1.0

My camera was set to auto-detect the lens and upon mounting the adapter, it displayed 'unknown lens' so I dialed in my 50mm F2 Summicron R 11215 (it only gave me a choice of 11216, which is an R Cam), but that's fine. It detected the lens and the setting persisted during power cycles. I also didn't have the Auto IOS issue either. The ISO floated or changed as normal.

Perhaps your issues are firmware related?
