It is sharp enough wide open and if you have a chance to review John Buckley's sample images here on the forum you can see that even wide open the focus point is sharp. As compared to my E58 F1 Noctilux I find the new 1.2 a little sharper but without as much aberrations in the out of focus areas, and in general all shots at 1.2 feel creative and really quite lovely. I only had a chance to take a few direct comparisons against my Dad's original 1968 1.2 and they do render a bit differently and in fact it is the original that I feel better fits Jono's description. Then at F2 this new iteration diverges from the original design and is far far sharper with most measurable performance aspects being better than the original. So far I feel like this is two lenses in one, wide open it is close the original 1.2 and offers a creative platform to play with, then from F2 on up it is much more of a modern lens which for me makes for a versatile all around 50mm focal length. It is also extremely well made, better than any other modern alloy barrel Leica lens with a solid general feel, perfect aperture clicks and beautifully smooth focus. The front cap is either brass or some kind of metal with the lovely Leica felt inside and the hood is beautifully made plus the second back cap is metal as well. Wide open this new 1.2 does not provide the really swirly out of focus rendering of the F1 Noctilux instead is more similar and gentle like the original 1.2. All in all really a very lovely lens. This is exactly the sort of considered, thoughtful appreciation that first attracted me to this forum. Rooted, no doubt, in yours, and your Dad's, passion for these lenses. Thank you. 3

One avenue that I need to explore is the use of the new noctilux f1.2 on a 24mp body. I've only shot it on an M10-R and it might play better with 24mp, chromatic aberrations may be less. Couldn't agree more. Thank you Leica!!! Daryl, Thats interesting re: your thoughts about 24MP vs shot with your M10R, as I have only shot with it on my M10M and enjoyed the gentle level of aberrations but important to note I was though shooting back to back with my E58 F1 Noctilux which has a lot LOT more aberrations. I do feel very fortunate to have my Dad's original 1.2 (thanks Dad for never selling it) to use and now compare with Leica's new 1.2 remake, and so far I feel Leica did a wonderful job in providing us with a good feel for the original version when shot wide open at 1.2, yet give us a more useful lens for everyday use from F2 on up. I honestly wish Leica had done some comparisons like this for their own launch so all of us could have better understood the dual character of the lens, but I think with enough members now receiving the lens the word will get out.

My experience with this is limited, I have found that focused light sources such as bright outdoor lamps shot with the M10-R/Noctilux f1 combination have too much chromatic aberrations to correct easily or at my skill level, perhaps flare would be a better description or it could be the interaction of lens and sensor. Whatever is at play here might be mitigated with a lower resolution sensor. This is the reason I hesitate to sell my M10-P, it's images are beautiful and 24mp with low contrast lenses might be a sweet spot.

The correlation between high megapixel sensors and the extent of chromatic aberrations does not really convince me. If at all, this might be of minor importance. For me, more than anything else, it is a question of how a lens is designed. The f/1.0 Noctilux has no aspherical elements, which seems to be the major reason for me, that it is prone to CA. The f/1.2 Noctilux is a double aspherical lens, the worlds first aspherical lens back in the 60ies. It has far less CA compared to the later produced f/1.0 Noctiluxes due to it`s design, as far as I have read in comparisons and as far as I have experienced this myself so far.

I didn't get to test much this past weekend, I did push the 1.2 using high contrast subjects and light sources as subjects. What I'm seeing is chromatic aberrations with out of focus areas primarily. If I focus on a bright object and it's in focus it may not have any color rims or deviation, however moving the focus back or front causes a magenta/green switching. Perhaps the asphericals help however this lens is not an apochromatic. Lightroom helps with corrections but it requires more than the eye dropper to remove everything. This is a very challenging lens and I mean that in a good way.
