I think a lot will depend on battery technology and heat dissipation. It not hard to speculate that the 10-R/M lack/passed on the M3 processor because of it.  AFAICT, the shot count, with EVF, seems to be dropping with each firmware release to a point where I'm now reluctantly considering a third. Like most, I prefer the physical attributes of the 10 body over the 240, but there's no denying that the loss of the larger battery was a very large step backward, at least for those who regularly use the EVF.

I quite frankly don't envy the task confronting Leica engineering. On one hand, there is an increasing contingent that is desirous of better EVF, IBIS, what have you, all technically feasible and available elsewhere for pennies on the dollar.  On the other, they are shackled to a body constrained by history, a fixed amount of space required by the RF and a rather vocal user base that for years groused incessantly about a couple the couple of extra mm of growth imposed by the M240. Must drive them nuts.

I know that this is on of the most controversial topics on the forum, but was wondering if - in case it is confirmed - the new 35 APO M heralds a new era of super modern lenses and EVF M cameras?

I'd rather guess that this lens speeds up the sales of the M10 and newer and of a maybe more recent version of the EVF. It would be a bit strange to invest in this relatively compact lens and use it on an SL or so. Although using a good old Summicron 35 R(king of bokeh) would minimize the chance of CA 😜, from what I've heard here.

would make sense

Sean Reid tested the pre-2016 Elmarit 28/2.8 and Voigtlander 21/4 and found that both did noticeably worse in the corners on the SL2 than the M240, even at f/8.

I confirm. CV 21/4 + Leica SL 601 --> mushy corners.

For ones sanity it can be important not to hear your clients, but also vital to listen to them to improve your product!

Obviously.

I mean this is an M lens, right? To be used on an M camera, surely? Including the ability to focus at 0.3 m, no?

It's a long time since Leica started to make lenses that was faster than the M camera could handle in daylight without aids (an ND filter). The Noctilux did not result in an M with a faster shutter speed. So I don't take for granted that a 30 cm MFD lens will lead to an EVF M either.

I am not sure this is apples with apples - fast lenses are not necessarily built for using in full bright light, if anything the contrary is true

We have heard of a new breed of modern lenses coming for Leica so for me the question is two fold.

I am also not sure if we will see an EVF M, though I would definitely be a customer alongside my RF Ms, but would also love to see a new - often rumoured - new 50 Lux that focuses below 70 cm

There's a good chance that Leica's small full frame EVF body (M-mount, L-mount, whatever) will be so delayed that it'll be upstaged by someone else. There's a Sigma fp L in the wings; the rumour mill is fairly sure it won't have a Foveon sensor, but just adding an EVF to the current body might keep everyone happy. It even has a heat sink built in for dealing with that extra processing. It would need an uprated battery though. Even so, the fp is tiny enough that it can afford to let out a few holes in its waist belt.

What not to like?

Too thick a sensor stack for M wides? Just guessing.

It's ugly! I love my M cameras because they are beautiful, because they certainly aren't practical.

I have 2 kids and should probably buy that mini van but damn, that 911 looks like a hell of a lot more fun!

Battery technology has advanced enough to pack more power in the same form as the current battery size. That is required for the addition of an EVF in my usage.  I use LeicaFotos as my external EVF vs one on the hot shoe. The WiFi drains the battery pretty fast. Nevertheless the M means rangefinder and if they want to use manual focus M lenses on a ff camera without a rangefinder that would be the SL.

The new and reissues are a separate set of profit opportunities that third party lenses don’t duplicate.

I am waiting for M11, or M12, with EVF only or RF with quality* EVF impementation, not in a hurry.

If it never materialise happy to settle for either M10P or M240P from S/H market to go along my M246  - my ZERO profit contribution for Leica.

*Note; in 2021 M10 EVF is not quality. M240 EVF is beyond the pale.
