For me, the most important feature is that the strap doesn't slip off my shoulders. Before I migrated to Leica, I used UpStrap for all my Canon cameras. Now I use the Leica 14312 for the same reason.

Leica 14312, the best, simplest, bling free strap ever for a Leica M, my M's from the M2 to the M11-D all ride with this strap.

I bought a RocknRoll strap. They're the only strap you'll ever need. However I've dumped using neck straps and I use a wrist strap. If I need to put the camera away I have a very small crossbody bag enough for my Leica, a battery and a Lenspen.

I’ve been using the Rock n Roll straps, form the company of the same name, on all my cameras for a number of years now.
Expensive addition, but worth it due to how they suspend and reduce the apparent camera weight on the shoulder or neck.

Today, after one year with the 14312, I switched back to the original M10 leather strap. The camera still slipped off my shoulder. The anti-slip pad helped a little, but still not enough. And it annoyed me a little that the pad often came the wrong way and had to be turned around. The original strap is refreshingly light and soft, and is perhaps still the best for me.

I think I am finished with this one now. Since last photo of it, I have decorated it some more.

After meeting a woman online who had her M10-P cut off her (she was wearing it cross body) by a criminal that then stole her camera. I bought one of these. The Oberwerth Mosel strap. It has a piece of wire through it to prevent cutting.  Although I do have a little voice saying "but Amanda if someone has a knife to cut your camera off you, maybe its best to let them cut off you"...  anyhoo, jury is out on that inner voice! Its a lovely strap, super soft and the padding on the neck band is very luxurious to the touch.

This strap may slow down cutting it with a knife, but a decent pair of tin or electrical snips and that wire isn't going to do a thing.

Yeh, I am in mixed minds about the whole thing.  If someone is at my side with a knife -  they can have the camera.  Not sure criminals are getting around with a knife and some tin/electrical snips just in case they are trying to steal a camera with a cut proof strap though :)   as I said, best to give them the camera and live to buy another one.

One thing to keep in mind is to not wear it cross body sling style so the camera is actually behind you. Less tempting is wearing it over one shoulder so the camera is at your side and hidden under your arm is preferable, with a hand holding the strap in crowded situations. Or better yet, in the hand, with strap wrapped around your wrist. But yes, never ever try and stop somebody with a knife until it's a life or certain death situation. Even the best martial artists will say it's guaranteed the winner is the one who ends up in the ambulance in critical condition, and the one who's dead on the street is the loser.

Another + for the Leica 14312, the best strap out there with no tra la la about it and the one that has lived on, lives on, all my M bodies, I've left the new straps that come with my M purchases in the original boxes never to see the light of day.

Regarding securely carrying my M's, ( with the Leica 14312 strap ), I pretty much always have the camera slung over my left shoulder then a coat / jacket / shirt over that. This way the strap is prevented to slip off your shoulder and when not in use the camera "hides" beneath the top layer of clothing...........Just swing it out to use it.
